My vet rules.
Last night I got home about 8ish and DH told me Ginger hurt her toenail. When I got a closer look, I realized that not only was it cracked on the top, but a part was hollowed out and I could see the quick (blood supply):
My poor girl.
DH said she wasn't paying much attention to it, not licking much, not limping.
We've never had this before so first I turned to Google and got conflicting information, so I took that picture and emailed it to our vet, Dr. Gurtman at Towne Line Veterinary in Hauppauge.
Within 2 hours, I had my answer, straight from Dr. Gurtman. He commended me on my photo taking skills and said it we should trim almost up to the injury site and if she's not incessantly licking, that it should heal on it's own.
I've only done this once before - email him a photo of something instead of making an appointment - but he answered very fast then too, while on vacation even. I try not to abuse his email, for fear one day I'll make a nuisance of myself but we feel so lucky to have such a caring and responsive vet.

My last one didn't either. The answer to everything was "make an appointment" which, if it's a larger problem, I understand. But the fact that that isn't the stock answer assures me of what I pretty much knew - it's more about caring for animals than the business aspect. I feel like we hear so much about the bad experiences or doctors, that I should toot their horn when something nice happens.

I 2nd that. He and Dr. Kothari are unbelievable. She even answered a friend's email question and they weren't even patients of hers. They care a lot.

Re: My vet rules.
Her nail is worse now. Has anyone had this before? I know it has to heal on it's own and we just have to prevent her from licking it.
But we were throwing her ball around for five minutes, just in the office, not long distances, and there was blood all over her paw. I cleaned it off and found that that lighter hollow part underneath is now gone. It's just raw under there.
It's not bleeding anymore but it looks like we're not going to be able to let her play even for a few days.
Denise, I was surprised myself. I don't know if it has to do with how much pain they're in, trust, etc. but I had to clean the blood off before and she was trying to pull her paw away a little. It kills me to know I had to cause her pain.
