Your Political Views and Your Kids

I am really, really liberal, like to the point that DH calls me a socialist and he's not very far off. Now that my DS is older, we often have conversations about politics, government, etc. I have noticed that I usually give him my viewpoint mostly, not so much the other side. (For example: "We believe that healthcare should be blah blah blah, but THEY believe blah blah blah.") So I'm giving the other side but not really in a way that's suggesting it is a valid belief.

My DH pointed out that I do this, and it bothered me because when I was teaching, I was SOOOO careful to be neutral with any political issues, to the point that on most issues my students had no clue where I stood personally.

So, are you careful to stay neutral with your kids in these kinds of discussions, or do they know where you stand? I know DS will develop his own opinions on this stuff eventually but I don't want to shove my beliefs down his throat (even though I'm right, of course Chat Icon )

PS- A funny story stemming from this.... my parents are very conservative, especially my dad. My DS made a comment on some issue to my dad, basically parroting something I had said. My dad looked at him for like a whole minute and said, "I see your pinko mother has gotten to you." And then walked away. I laughed and my poor DS was like Chat Icon LOL

What's the point of having kids if you can't brainwash them into being just like us?Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

No. I'm not careful to stay neutral. I give my opinion on any topic that they ask me.

Just like religion, I give them the basics & they can chose their own path for me to criticize & challenge later on.Chat Icon
