Being induced next week- Please talk to me about cervadril

I just got back from my 38.5 week appointment. Despite my efforts to get the baby to drop she is still high and my cervix has not changed. Im due next Friday but my OB doesn't want me going past my due date for precautionary reasons. I have to go to L&D Monday night for cervadril and im being induced Tuesday morning. Im really nervous bc im worried that the cervadril will be unsuccessful and ill go through hours of labor only to end with a c.sectionChat Icon My doctor seems optimistic that things will work out but im still really worried.

Anyone have any advice or experience to share?

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon you will be fine...I was given cervadril its a pill that they insert inside you. I was given it twice and it made my water break. From induction to birth was about 12 hours.

Good Luck!

I was given cervadil at 39 weeks. My OB broke my water the next morning and I labored for about 12 hours- but never progressed past 3cm. The baby's heartrate was dropping everytime I contracted so they decided to give me a section.

The cervadil was nothing- it's like a monistat type capsule that they insert.

Re: Being induced next week- Please talk to me about cervadril

DS was born almost three weeks ago with a cervadil induction at 40w 4d.

Got the cervadil around 2am, dilated to 5-6cm by 9:30am, got epidural and continued to progress throughout the day, started pushing at 5:08pm, and DS was born at 6:24pm.

My OB understood my fears and agreed that if I didn't make reasonable progress with the initial dose of cervadil, we'd go straight to a c-section. We didn't need to go that route, though.

I had a good experience! Feel free to ask specific questions.

Re: Being induced next week- Please talk to me about cervadril

My water broke at home and I got cervadil once I got the hospital because although my water was broken, I was not dilated at all and DD never dropped. After 12 hours of having the cervadil in (no big deal...barely felt them put it in), I still had not dilated and I had a c section...BUT I was on a time limit since my water had broken more than 12 hours before and also DD's heartrate was dropping alot. I think if you dont have those conditions, it might work well! good luck!

Re: Being induced next week- Please talk to me about cervadril

I got induced and started with cervidil. It was in for about 7-8 hours and then they started pitocin.
Cervidil was inserted at 1230 am and dd was born at 729 pm.

I don't think anyone else has said anything but I'll tell you- putting in and taking out the cervidil hurt like a bi tch. they dig for gold.

I agree with this. If you are only a fingertip dilated it does hurt like someone is sticking their fist up your businessChat Icon I had two rounds of it and then pitocin but didn't progress until I stopped being stubborn and took an epiChat Icon

Good luck! It can work out well, but keep your mind open.

Ditto on the pain/discomfort. I actually took a dose of morphine about 45 minutes after it was inserted - mostly to give me relief from the discomfort so I could sleep.

I had a similar experience with cervadil. It was administered at 11 pm and they took it out after only 4 hours because I was contracting every 1 minute at only 3cm. Started pit at 10 am,and long story short- my son was delivered via c-section at 536 pm.

Successful induction right here; I had cytotec though. It was very slow moving. First pill at 5pm on a Wednesday, Had my son at Friday at 5am. I was warned beforehand by my doctor that I might end up having a c section.

Re: Being induced next week- Please talk to me about cervadril

Thanks everyone for your responses. I guess it really is a situational matter. I am such a control freak so this is really hard for me to swallow. In the end, I know whatever is best for the baby is what will ultimately be. I'm still going to do all I can between now and next Monday night to get things rolling on my own.

Thanks Chat Icon

My response didn't post, but this!!!! I just posted my birth story and in it I wrote that thankfully, I don't remember them taking it out but DH said I was in so much pain (the dr who put it in put it in too far) that the dr taking it out apologized profusely.

Cervadil was nothing! It was the pitocin that brought on painful contractions. 26 hours from start to finish and it was all with it!!!!!!!

Re: Being induced next week- Please talk to me about cervadril

Do some research on Bishop's Scores -- the lower the score, the more likely a C-section. Personally, if I had a low Bishop score I would decline an induction unless there was a real medical reason, so this is something you might want to consider also.

I also just want to warn you since I saw that someone else on here had been induced with Cytotec -- this is a very dangerous drug that is not approved by the FDA for induction of labor. Hopefully, this won't come up for you, but please research this drug carefully in case it is suggested. Cervadil is a different drug and much safer -- I only mentioned the other because it is so dangerous and it is really important that all women considering induction understand how dangerous this drug is.

ETA: You might want to research using Evening Primrose Oil to help ripen the cervix before the induction.

cervidil did nothing for me. i had 2 rounds of it (12 hrs each)
i then had a ballon foley inserted to force my cervix at 4cm and started on the pitocin. the dr broke my water when i was about 6cm. ds was born 16 hrs after the balloon was inserted.

fyi the cervidil wasnt at all painful for me. drs and nurses recommended the epidural for the balloon which i got and was thankful i did Chat Icon

Re: Being induced next week- Please talk to me about cervadril

see the cervadil insertion wasnt painful for me for some reason and I was never dilated. Although possibly I blocked it out...
but yes i will say, it is all situational. It really depends on so many factors whether the induction will be successful or not. Good luck!

Re: Being induced next week- Please talk to me about cervadril

i had that with my DD induction- 2 rounds, well 1.5 my water broke during the 2nd round. i had that with Pit.
the worst part is that once its placed you cant get up and walk around. otherwise, you dont feel anything.
