Hot yoga classes- update again!

For those of you that take yoga classes, do you pay monthly?

I would love to start attending classes, right now I do DVD's and it is getting boring. It just seems so expensive no matter where I look. Chat Icon Is this just the reality of yoga?

Does anyone know of any deals around the Huntington area?

TIA Chat Icon

Update: I found a deal for one month unlimited hot yoga for $60! You ladies have made it sound so great, I really hope I love it as well since I have never done this type. I got my Mom to try it with me too Chat Icon

2nd Update: So I have gone about 8 times and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!! Chat Icon I love the heat too. I had one crappy instructor but the rest have been really amazing. Tonight I had an off night for the first time and I felt very light headed. I had to sit out a few poses and was annoyed at myself. When it was over though I was just excited to come again and have a better class. For me that is how I know I really love it.

Thanks to all the HY ladies here who made it sound so great because it is. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Yoga classes

Not in that area, however, I go to Hot Yoga Massapequa.

Right now, I pay $145.00 a month for unlimited monthly classes.

It IS pricey, however, I could also spend that easily on take-out and crap from Target. As long as I continue to go 3-4x a week which is my normal routine, then it is justifiable to me.

I look at it as 90 minutes of "me" time, my major form of exercise/self-love, and it's also a lot better then a therapist.

I don't know if I will be able to do it, but my studio is offering a reduced cost plan for people planning to take part in a 20-day challenge in the month of June.

I also know some people will do work-study so they don't have to pay to go. I know there's at least one hot yoga enthusiast on the boards that does this.

If I felt I could make a committment to something like that, heck, I'd do that too!

ETA: I know some studios are a lot more then this too. I also know that if you pay say, several months to a year in advance, they will take more money off. If something happened that you couldn't continue, I am sure most studios would be accomodating and refund your money.

Lastly, you could just check out a bunch of different studios. I know where I go, they offer 10 consecutive days of unlimited hot yoga for $20.00 to all brand new students to their studio.

Awhile back someone posted a link that shows similar deals in the local area. I believe it was Lipglossjunky.

My running club just sent an email about yoga recommendations (HTH)

(I blocked out names)

Yoga References ****

I note below that you are looking for Yoga references. I have one. I have been taking Yoga classes for almost 3 years at Inner Spirit Yoga Center In East Northport. I love it. ALL levels of Yoga. All are welcome. They are at 224 Vernon Valley Rd. East Northport (just North of LIRR tracks on East side of Vernon Valley. Phone is 631-262-9642. Web site is www.innerspirityoga.com. You (or anyone else) can mention my name. They know me VERY WELL. ***

***V met a wonderful yoga teacher, Oksana Danziger, who is a former runner. This lets her focus her teaching based on V's running lifestyle…stretches, techniques and form including breathing. V said she is incredible. Her schedule is listed at www.liyogasoul.com. In the summer she plans to have a free class on the beach for all people who want to try yoga. You can find information about it on her website at the end of May.

Re: Yoga classes- update, groupon deal today!

That's awesome! Good luck.

And just as a FYI:

You're probably going to HATE your first few hot yoga classes.

Just do not leave the room. Sit out if you need to, but don't leave ;). Keep going back. They say you need to go at least 10x for your body to become used to the heat.

Drink a ton of water today and tomorrow too. It helps to be super-hydrated.

Awesome update! I used to really enjoy hot yoga too but the time commitment got to be too much for me. It turned into a 2.5 hour process for me....traveling there, getting there early to get a spot and then having to go home and shower. I wish there was a 60 minute class.

Yoga Oasis in dix hills.

The instructor taught a few classes already so I don't know if she was tired but she basically just sat there and just said what to do. Maybe that is the norm? I was hoping she would help with my form since it was my first class (and I told her that). Soo I am gonna try someone else next time. Chat Icon

Yeah it is a lot and I have to work around DH's crazy hours but I really want to try to fit in at least 3x a week.

If I continue after this month I am probably going to try to find a place closer to me to cut down on the time.

with all the instructors I have had, none ever sit down. They walk around, help people with positions if they see you doing something wrong, or offer extra words of encouragement to you. Maybe she just had an off-night.

Be sure to drink TONS of water tonight to replenish! otherwise, you will end up with a headache. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Yoga classes- update, groupon deal today!

Some instructors are definitely better than others.

I also know some have the philosophy that they don't like to "call people out" because it can make some people uncomfortable to be put on the spot.

The time committment is probably the hardest thing with hot yoga. That's a big reason why I haven't been over the past week.

I also wish my studio offered a different time schedule for classes during the week. Oh well.

Anyways, I also advise checking out different studios, or a studio specifically geared to hot yoga if you like this style.

I know my studio is probably a further hike for you but I have met a few ladies who make the drive from near you because they feel it's one of the better HY studios around.

HOWEVER most of the instructors who teach at night, teach 2-3 classes back to back and are wiped by the last class of the night. check out the schedule and experiment with different teachers. i can give you a lowdown on who i think is good/great/and ehhhh.

Re: Hot yoga classes- update again!

Update on top but I have a question.

What do you all eat before class? I think I felt weird tonight because I hadn't eaten in so long but it is hard to time it right. Should I just eat a small portion of protein a couple of hours beforehand?

SO glad you are loving it!

I usually don't eat 3 hours prior to going...I just drink 2 bottles of water.

Maybe a banana may help?

You may feel weird too because if it's hot or muggy outside, I def. think it impacts the class.

Re: Hot yoga classes- update again!

It's perfectly normal to have off classes, no matter how often you go.

As for eating before class, I will either have a piece of fruit a couple hours ahead of time, something carby like a handful of crackers or a small bowl of cereal.

Maintaining hydration is also key.

I try to drink at least 3 large bottles of water throughout the day.
