Re: linkedin network
Haha...I joined awhile ago too.
It's kind of like a FB for work/ professional contacts. (So, it is LIKE a boring FB! :)
After I joined, I got so many requets from people who I had zero interest in maintaining as a contact, so I haven't been back on there in a few years.

Re: linkedin network
Its networking site I use linked in for my business and professional contacts and facebook for my friends and family
It is good to use when looking for a new job, you can have recommendations right on the site.
You also can find out information about the person interviewing who you may know in common etc. Just remember they can see the same thing so becareful who you add.

It's for business networking. When I was a recruiter I used it a lot to find candidates for jobs I was trying to fill.

Same.
And will admit if someone isn't on there I generally don't give their application much consideration.

Now THIS is interesting.
I have an account and it's all updated and I've got recommendations and whatnot but I didn't know having a linked in account was so important that if someone doesn't have one you're less inclined to consider them as much of a viable candidate as someone else who does.
What makes this a deal breaker (so to speak) for you?

I use LinkedIn to see if we have common connections so I can ask folks who have worked with candidate about their work.
I use it to see if they participate in work related organizations including published pages or public presentations.
Also good to see if what is on resume matches the LI profile.
I'm in media, would find it odd if someone in the space didn't have a LI profile.

That's pretty interesting. I feel LI is a good tool for networking and was helpful for finding a job but I never realized or moreso considered it from the recruiting aspect. Thanks for responding!
One other question...
You mentioned being in media and it being unusual for someone to not have a LI profile, would you say that holds true for other industries?
I know you don't know for sure but do you have a feeling one way or the other?

Definitely IT, sales, finance industries.
This wasn't directed toward me but I would think anyone looking for a job should consider having an LI profile.
The only private industry that may not care about that kind of thing is creative.

Thanks for the input, the question was really posed to anyone willing to read and answer it.
To you point about creative industries, I'd still say it's somewhat necessary. I have a few friends who are in the design field and they have LI profiles. If anything, it links people to their own websites with more of their portfolio. But at the very least you can see where they've worked prior.

Second this.
I know HR uses it here for prospecting and has been successful in poaching folks in IT, Sales, Finance.
