My fourth Beta: Update
So I had my 4th beta today at 23DPO
This is how things have gone:
10 DPO - BFP on HPT 16 DPO - Beta of 26.7 18 DPO - Beta of 38 21 DPO - Beta of 58 22 DPO - Started spotting 23 DPO - Heavier bleeding, Beta of 129
My RE is concerned that the numbers are still going up and I'm going in tomorrow to have a sonogram to look for an ectopic pregnancy.
I just want this to be over and move on. I'm tired of being sad and whiney and scared. I just want to move on.
I'm hoping the fact that I started bleeding and having bad cramps is a good sign. Maybe the beta didn't have a chance to go down once I started bleeding?
On a side note - I don't understand how an ectopic pregnancy can even happen during IVF.
UPDATE: Well, my RE was unable to see anything anywhere (which I kind of expected because my numbers were so low). He doesn't believe it is ectopic, but does think that something is growing somewhere (hopefully, my uterus, even though it isn't viable). So I go back for bloodwork tomorrow and probably Sunday. if numbers don't go down, we will schedule a D&C. If my numbers don't go down after that, we'll talk about the methotrexate shot.
Thanks for listening last night and for all of your responses. I was having a rough time last night, and you ladies made me feel better knowing that someone was listening and understood my worries!
Also, I was reassured that my doctor did not push me at ALL about the shot. This is probably the longest talk I've ever had with him, and if anything - I walked away from today feeling better about the future and my chances than before. I do trust my RE and I'm glad my confidence of that was renewed.

Re: My fourth Beta
Ugh, I know what it's like to be in beta hell. Hang in there, and I hope your doctor figures out what's going on tomorrow.
(I am also curious how IVF could possibly result in an ectopic. )

Thanks I looked it up online, and they said that your chances of ectopic increase when you do IVF. I find that so weird. I will ask my doctor tomorrow how that is even possible.
Sigh.

Re: My fourth Beta
i googled. although rare if it is an ectopic due to ivf...then what happens is the fertlized egg travels back up into the fallopian tubes. rare but for some reason it can happen .
again i hope this isnt the case!

Re: My fourth Beta
i so don't want to scare you and i really hope my story is completely different than what is going on with you but this sounds like my ectopic. the biggest difference is that my numbers jumped around a little bit going up and then down then up but the were all low. my OB at the time told me for a month that it was a chemical while i bled then stopped bleeding then bled again, etc until finally my stomach started hurting and i was rushed to the ER.
it's SO good you are under the care of an RE b/c i'm sure if they suspect ectopic they will treat it with methotrexate before it progresses too far. i really hope none of this is the case for you and that it's not an ectopic. please FM me if you have any questions at all i'm SO SO sorry you are dealing with this. my heart has been breaking for you.

Re: My fourth Beta
i am sorry for you i am not a dr, but i think it is a chemical. numbers are going up, not up and down. maybe it just takes time for your body to acknowledge that preg is not viable and then it will start rejecting it. When i had a mc, my beta was over 2,000 at some point, but then started dropping. I am sorry again. PLease take care of yourself

Re: My fourth Beta
Thanks girls I just have this feeling that it is going to be ectopic. I feel like everything that could have gone wrong this cycle - did. Why change things now?
But let me ask a question. If I go in tomorrow and my doctor doesn't see anything - do you think he'll push the methotrexate (spelling?) shot just to be safe? I'd kind of rather try doing bloodwork again on Friday before he does the shot. Maybe my numbers will go down. I'm horrible at speaking up at the doctor - I get upset and just agree with whatever they say. Another girl (from LIF) that went to my doctor in the past told me when she was in a similar situation, he pushed her to take the shot.
I don't want to, because if I do, I'll have to wait 3 cycles before trying again. I know it sounds horrible, but I've kind of come to terms with the loss - it is just the fear of not being able to move on that is getting me so upset now. . As I read this back, I'm thinking I probably sound nutty.

you don't sound nutty i know you must be so scared i don't know if your dr will push the shot or not but it is your decision. if you feel better waiting for another beta, or even two more betas, then that's what you should do. i'm definitely not an expert but my understanding about ectopics is that as long as they are caught early, it is treatable with the methotrexate. another beta or two will only take a few more days so if that's what you want you should def ask for it. my story is EXTREME b/c my doctor was incompetent and didn't listen to my concerns so my ectopic got all the way to like 8 weeks.
i hear what you're saying about the shot and i would feel 100% the same about having to wait the 3 cycles but if your dr feels confident that it is ectopic then the shot is the best option. my surgery resulted in losing my right tube so if i were ever in the situation again (god forbid) i would take the shot.
i'm really still hoping it's chemical for you and that your numbers start going down. curiousO is right that since your numbers aren't going up and down and up again, it may not be ectopic.
lots of hugs to you

Re: My fourth Beta
i would ask to hold off on the shot. i do not think he can see anything on u/s with such a low beta, but since you are not in pain and already started bleeding, i would ask to wait and see. maybe for another 4 -5 days.
i was told that shot really throws you back for good 4-5 months and i am glad that at the time i insisted on waiting a bit and saw my beta going down. well, it did take long azzz time to it to come down, but still better than 4 months. i mc on 12/17 last year and had my next IUI in early Feb of this year.

Re: My fourth Beta
I'm sorry you're going through this. I know we spoke thru FM already but I wanted to tell you they will probably push the shot @ you (they did with me). Stand your ground--- they want you to sign paperwork before they give you the shot. When I went through it with them I told them I would take the paperwork home and discuss it w/ DH. The dr called me that night after getting that day's bloodwork back and told me that my levels were making them worry (my beta was MUCH lower than yours @ that point)--- that it was affecting my other organs. They scared me into taking it, and to this day I'm still sorry I didn't hold out a little longer. If you're bleeding I would definitely tell them you want to wait for another one or two betas and unless they can give you a really good reason, that you're not taking it today. I'm here if you want to talk. My are with you.

Re: My fourth Beta
Your case sounds exactly like mine....
I posted on your other tread (with beta numbers)....
I still think its a chemical but of course I am not a doctor and everyone's body is differnt.....most doctors will push the shot....especially that with a beta of 129 they will not see anything....
They also pushed a shot on me but I refused (you have the right by law)....I just had a gut feeling that it was not ectopic....I was right.....My pregnancy terminated on its own at almost 7 weeks...during that time I bled (brown & red color) with beta going up (never down & up)..one day I started bleeding very heavy and passed tissue...after that my beta went down to 0 within a week...
I am glad I didn't take the shot (it is poison no matter how you look at it)..I got pregnant again within 3 months....
GL & for you

It may be poison, but it is also life saving to someone who has an ectopic pregnancy. I had 2, the first one I lost my entire tube due to ectopic pregnancy. If the shot can prevent that, i think it's a good thing.
Yes, for the shot you must not TTC for 3 cycles because it depletes your body of folic acid. And if you conceive it could be dangerous for the baby. I'm not sure how long you have to wait after a chemical or miscarriage.
To the orgininal poster, I have gone both routes, waited out an ectopic and got the shot right away. I can't say either is easy. Go with your gut and stand your ground. I'm so sorry you are dealing with this.

Re: My fourth Beta: Update
I am so sorry you are going thru this.
I had a very similiar situation from the outcome of my 2nd round of IVF, and bc my betas were rising the were concerned it was ectopic. I waited a few days retested and my #s even went up to around 1000 or so. It ended up being a blighted ovum. I had a D&C. It was quick and relativly painless (the emotional toll was the worst part) I was able to try again pretty soon (8 weeks). If I can help answer any questions, please FM me.
