Frustrated

We had a big event yesterday which I was a main coordinator for. It's not my job to do events but our event coordinator was on vacation.

The event was huge in scale and we had 3 weeks to pull it off. If done properly it should take about 2-3 months.

One of the more senior staff was the main contact and I was assisting her. She wasn't brought on to do this job either but had to step in like I did.

When the my boss publicly thanked everyone at the event, she mentioned her name and the event coordinator who had been on vacation. My own boss didn't realize how deep I was in it. She lumped me with all other volunteers.

She thanked me when it was just one on one. Then the other person who I was assisting thanked me too and thanked everyone in general including people who had minor involvement.

I really felt blindsided. I practically killed myself to get this event off. I worked with our cablers for network access, our electricians, facilities staff, senior management, media and marketing materials. I proofed every correspondence that went out even sending on my boss' behalf. Logistics and details were everything.

I confided in one of my coworkers and she thinks that since nothing was disrupted in her world (I'm her assistant) she didn't realize how much of my time was devoted to it.

I know my boss appreciates me but all of a sudden I felt that I didn't need to go over and above when others would get the lion's share of the credit and possibly be considered for bigger and better for the work I did. Yes, I can add this to my resume and I will but it makes me think that I need to make a change. I think I'm being taken for granted.

Thanks for reading.

Re: Frustrated

I would be upset too.

Honestly, I do think it's time for you to leave! The nut case that you work close by. Now this!

I would feel really bad and unappreciated. I am not a cry baby. And I think you have already voiced issues with the other nutso in the past and it might look like a whining person.

So I would just start looking and leave.

But that's me!

Re: Frustrated

Well she got equal credit for helping. Nice right?

She ordered the food (which wasn't right), the table cloths, and left before we were packing up all the laptops and monitors.

She was getting prettied up for a night out so she couldn't stay.

Meanwhile today I needed her to print a 36 page deck, double sided for a meeting and she messed that up.

Yep, annoyed to say the least.

I hope you singled out yourself in the email.

Honestly, I would want more appreciation. How would your boss react if you talked to them about how disappointed you were at being overlooked?

No way I could have done that. It was a general blanket email to a large list.

My boss has her hands full. She's living a life no one wants here..no one would want her job. I give her a lot of slack because of that and I don't usually bring my personal/business feelings to her. I feel she doesn't need me b!tching when everyone else around her is creating problems.

Re: Frustrated

I've felt similarly to you at times, so know how you feel.

I think it is because when you are the type of person who is always known to go above and beyond, it just becomes an expectation and something that is overlooked as going above and beyond.

My bosses can get like this with me because they know that 9 times out of 10 I will make something happen that they wouldn't dare ask another employee to do because they know they will either A.) get a lot of lip or B.) that person will just F it up.

It bugs me though because very rarely are thank yous given and usually I am not asked but told to do something.

I work with another woman who is similar in character and they treat her the same way.

Re: Frustrated

P.S. I too am not the person to gripe to my boss. I know what kind of pressure he is under and would never want his position.

I will however often make a quick statement (usually in a comedic manner) so he knows how I feel, however, it serves no purpose to go on and on about something that very often cannot be changed.

I work with someone who perseverates like this and all it has served to do is alienate him from the team.

Could you ask this person for feedback on your role and your performance, maybe in the context of a debrief for the person who was on vacation?

I've been talking to her and she is nothing but complimentary and has told anyone who came to her to thank her. The person who was on vacation has also given me credit and likes me a lot.

It's just that my boss is so high level she is not seeing it.

It's time for that sit down. I've been her assistant for 7 years. It's time for a title change and some recognition.

I've been googling the term "chief of staff" and I know there are many levels to this type of job but many of the things I do match that description.

I just don't know how to approach it.

I've spoken to HR a few times. The person I have confided in is on vacation this week, so maybe I need to finish updating my resume and get it to her so she can give me some advice. She knows me for about a year now but doesn't know my full background.

My boss knows I kick butt for her but maybe she doesn't know just how serious I am about my career.
