Need photo help/advice

My family and I had professional photos taken while on vacation....well they came out horrible! We viewed them on their computers and at best we liked 5 "good" ones, but when we got the prints in the mail, some were blurry. I called the company and they said they used a slow shutter release because of the sunset low-light. Why would they use that with a 3 year old, a 9 mo, and one shot was us walking?

Can you tell me if their technique used was wrong?

I am questioning their professionism, they started 15min late (8pm instead of 7:45). I have worthless family photos. They are not even standing by their work and I am a crying mess over this!Chat Icon

Thank you for responding!

It sounds like the screwed up to me - they pretty much said it was too dark to take good photos, that's why they slowed down the shutter speed. Problem with that is if you hold the shutter open, you get blurriness with any motion unless the object of the photo is stationary. The camera should be on a tripod too, to help minimize motion.

I am no expert and barely able to use my SLR, that's why I am asking...
I thought the same thing. I think they were taking the shots too late and tried to do what they could to get shots.

their technique isn't "wrong" per se, but typically if you are using natural light you up your ISO so you can have a faster shutter speed. Also if they are offering family portraits and wanted to capture the sunset they should have used off camera flash.
When I shoot people, I am concentrating on making THEM look good and not worrying too much about the sunset, which if they knew what they were doing they could bring up in post.
You might want to bring that to their attention or at the very least ask for your money back. They should have at least been apologetic.

This. Particularly when working with children, a slow shutter speed is going to catch a lot of motion blur. Sorry they didn't come out so well. Chat Icon

I am just learning and its basic knowledge in photography that a low shutter speed will cause motion blur..they should have used an external flash...definitely get your money back!
