Special ed license
Anyone know how to go about getting an extension license in special education? I heard that it's only 12 credits and can be done in the summer. Anyone have any experiences? Thanks so much!

Re: Special ed license
I have SWD 1-6 and I applied for it via TEACH online. They evaluated my info and sent a letter stating that I need 9 more credit.....BUT they don't specifiy which classes you need to take. I tried navigating the website like they tell to you, but it's so hard to locate the information.
I'm hoping that someone responds!!

Re: Special ed license
I just completed (May 2011) the 12 credits over at Dowling. You also need to take the Autism workshop when doing the extension.
Anyway, one of my professors told me that as of Fall 2011 NYS is not letting anyone obtain their degree by just completing the 12 credits, you'll have to complete the whole program. I don't know what they will do for people that have already started the 12 credit extension, but I would double check just to be safe.
Feel free to FM if you have any questions.
Good luck!

This is also what Dowling told me when I tried to start classes for my extension back in October of 2010. I registered for St. John's non-matriculated for this fall because I couldn't find any info on the TEACH website stating this.
I applied for cert through BOCES and I need 4 classes, the CST in Special Ed. and the NYS Autism Workshop, so I'm not sure if it can be done in 8 weeks.

Re: Special ed license
the CST is common sense ... a test to be taken in a day. The autism workshop is a 3 hour course ... I paid 45.00 and took it online ...
the 9 credits is what will get you. You can apply now and then work towards finishing the requirements.

Thank you all so much! So figure that NYS would do that! Anything for money...

Re: Special ed license
Check out the CITE program (Center for Integrated Teacher Education) based out of Plainview. They offer accelerated special education programs.
