California

We decided to postpone Europe until next year when things aren't so busy in our families with babies being born, weddings, showers, etc.
One of the places we are considering now is California for October.
What are the must-see places in California?
The best beaches?
Best hotels?
We will go for 1 week.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Re: California

I think my favorite part of California was Venice Beach, Malibu, Santa Monica...
All very close together. I did them all in one day.
Very Very fun
Hotel I stayed in was in Hollywood which was a really fun place to visit too. Cant remember, think it was Hilton.

Re: California

Hmmm California is one of the most spectacular places this country has to offer. What do you think you will be in the mood for in October ? If you want to lay on the beach....and spend time ...in a warmer place....the I highly recommend San Diego, and/or Orange County. If you go to San Diego, spend time in La Joya, and Coronado Beach.

Los Angelos, is ok...and fun to do if you never did 'it' before. West Hollywood is great for nightlife and to be exposed to LA's alternative lifestyles :)

If you want beauty and relaxation, I suggest.....going to Monterrey and Carmel, driving to Big Sur. That's incredible beauty......it will put you in awe. You can then also drive to Napa Valley, which is amazing and beautiful especially in October. San Francisco, is not far from there at all.....and one of my favorite cities.

Northern California has great weather, and beaches...however, because of a huge canyon in that part of ocean, the water is too cold to swim in without a wetsuit.

Enjoy ..........California....is a great choice for a vacation :)

Re: California

I've been to LA & San Diego.

We stayed in Santa Monica & Beverly Hills and it was beautiful. There are a few really nice places to stay in Santa Monica - Shutters is most famous, Lowes and a few other "very expensive" hotels right on the water. The whole area is great. There are cheaper hotels across the street from the beach which are cheaper.
You can visit Westwood, West Hollywood, Hollywood Sign, Griffin Observatory, Getty Museum, Beverly Hills. You can buy a map and drive around and tour the stars homes. That's pretty cool. Sunset Strip has a pretty hot nightlife.

We went to San Diego overnight (3 hour drive from LA) and stayed in Coronado, which is an island right next to San Diego. We did the nightlife and the next day saw the Zoo. I would have loved to stay longer there and see more of the city.

I wish I would have gone North too, but San Fran is about 8 hours drive from LA so we chose San Diego instead.

Thanks for posting htis... I did a search for California but this didn't show upChat Icon

All of the places listed above sound really good! I want to see everything if we have the time. Do you think staying in a southern part for a few days and then staying more north for the rest of the week is a good idea? I don't reqally know where any of these places are... I need to find a map!

Re: California

I loved San Diego, Burbank (where the TV and movie studios are) outside of LA, the tourist parts of Hollywood and Anaheim since I'm a HUGE Disney fan. We stayed in Anaheim and made day trip everywhere with one night in San Diego.

Re: California

If you are in San Diego, see the zoo. And if you head up the coast, stop at San Juan Capistrano Mission - it's really beautiful. We drove from San Diego to Cambria - beautiful drive -and then up to Napa. I was slightly disappointed in Napa, it is so commercial. I hear Sonoma is nicer.

LA has tons to do and see. Malibu has lovely beaches. The Redwood Forest is supposed to be awesome. Our problem was we tried to do too much in too little time. So I would suggest, chose 2 or 3 places and really enjoy them. The distances are much further than you would think, and the traffic in LA and all around LA is horrendous.

Re: California

REALLY horrendous. There's nothing worse than sitting in six lanes of bumper to bumper traffic. It'll make you appreciate the LIE Chat Icon
