Does being a TA count towards certification?

Hi everyone..

I'm going into my 3rd year with my initial certification. For the past 2 years I've been a perm. sub. in an elementary school. Although a great job, it hasn't counted toward my certification since it's from Oct-May, not the full year.

Does anyone know if being a TA counts towards that? I scheduled an interview in a GREAT district for a full-day TA position (with benefits), and have gotten mixed answers on whether it will count towards the teaching time I need to hold my certification.

Thanks!

I don't believe TA does, but subbing absolutely does! You will not get a full year, but you will get a portion of the year - and that will eventually add up!

Will it? I was under the impression that since it is unmentored and not the full year that it wouldn't. If it came down to the sub position again or the TA & both didn't count, I was going to go with the TA job as it comes with benefits.

I wish the NYS certification office was easier to get a hold of! haha

You have two options:

1. Contact your local BOCES. They should be able to give you a firm answer

2. Just stay on the line with NYSED. It is annoying, but eventually you will get through.

TAs in my district are certified teachers. Their time on the job does NOT count towards certification. Girls have had that cert run out. It is a crime. These girls are teaching every day and getting no credit towards their certs. Ugh.

They would however get credit if they subbed. Makes no sense whatsoever.

It doesnt which I think is ridiculois. However, my time as a TA counted bc my district had us listed as "long term substitutes". Where I worked we really were more than the typical TA and modified work etc... You should see if your district will do something similar.

I'm not exactly sure, but that's what I have heard from some of the TA's in our school. They all leave to take subbing positions.

Yes... subbing counts.

Re: Does being a TA count towards certification?

Thanks everyone for all of your help! I called BOCES yesterday to find out, and being a TA doesn't count while being a sub does. I was kind of upset about this, the TA position is in a GREAT district, is full year, offers benefits AND it's a literacy specific position, not a grade level TA or anything. So basically, a job I'd love to have while waiting for an actual teaching job. However, if it doesn't count towards my certification I don't want to "waste" that year & be behind a year in getting my 3 years in. I called the school to decline the interview for next Tuesday & e-mailed the principal to explain.
