What's the deal on hiring in NYC?
I had thought they were still under a hiring freeze for most subject areas still. A friend of mine recently applied to a few elementary positions though and has a few interviews lined up.
Last year my application got rejected, and I'm thinking it's because I only had my elem. certification. This year I'm certified for literacy, too, so I just reapplied to see.

I was also under the impression(I'm a NYC Elem Teacher) that there was a hiring freeze. I'd like to now know this though, hopefuly some knowledgable people will reply.

Re: What's the deal on hiring in NYC?
some how principals are hiring outside, not sure how.
in my school last year a few teachers were hired (took over leaves and then hired for next yr) who were NOT already in the excess pool. IN fact one was a cousin of a coworker.
If you know someone teaching in NYC, def ask them to pass your resume along.

It is my understanding Principals can ONLY hire from the ATR (excessed pool). An exception would be if there were no people in the pool for a given position.

I just received an email from my grad school, and it said that the NYC DOE extended the application deadline til this Friday, and are hiring only certain subject areas (special ed. was one, I don't remember the others).

If you are a new school, I think like two years old or less you can hire a certain percentage of your staff as new teachers/hires.

Re: What's the deal on hiring in NYC?
I submitted my application just in case, although I'm not expecting anything from it.
She has her ESL/Bilingual certification which I read isn't under the hiring freeze. However, when I asked her if they were all ESL/Bilingual jobs she said that some were regular elementary ed. positions. I can't see any postings since my application hasn't been approved (if it does at all), but she said there were a few elementary ed positions up that did not say internal candidates only. I don't think they are newer schools, either.

Probably science and math and ESL. If you are spec ed certified and ESL you are very attactive.

Re: What's the deal on hiring in NYC?
They accepted my application within less than 24 hours. I', wondering if my second certification got me in. I did see a handful of elementary jobs, but not many.
