I am peeved/borderline livid at my SLP
My DS has speech on Tuesday afternoons.
When we started she told me 4PM but the sheet I received in the mail said 4:30. I asked her about it and she said no, not really 4 bc I can't get here in time for that, more like 4:15. Fine. But yet she has been later than that and calls about 2 minutes before she pulls up to say she will be late (at this point it's usually 4:25/4:30)
Since we started she has never been on time. We also have speech on Thursday mornings and she is ALWAYS late.
So today I decided to take my DS out before speech since he napped earlier and we had about 1.5 hrs. I got home at 4:16PM to find a note on my door that she left bc we weren't there. I called her immediately (it's now 4:17) and she was like oh I got there at 4:10, I'm on my way to my next kid, I already called them.
So she can call my cell when she's late but she couldn't call my cell to see if I was nearby????? How convenient! I have made it very clear to her how important his speech is and that I take it seriously so me "forgetting" a session is unlikely and she knows that. I can wait around for her for 20 minutes but she couldn't call or wait 5 minutes?!?!
LIVID! Thanks for letting me vent if you read this.
ETA: She knows I visit my parents sometimes and that they live 5 minutes away, which is where I was.

Re: I am peeved/borderline livid at my SLP
I am an ABA Early Intervention Provider and I totally agree with you that her behavior is totally unacceptable.
1. I make it a rule to wait 10-15 minutes outside the house until I even place a phone call to a family if they arent home.
2. She totally should have called you! Not ran away when she noticed no one was home!
3. There is NO WAY she was on her way to her next case. No one moves up a session that quickly!
I would have this conversation with her first and see if her timeliness gets better, and if it doesnt within a week, definitely place a call to her agency.
It angers me to hear that parents have to deal with this. Providers are suppose to help and make your life easier. I am sorry you have to deal with this.

Re: I am peeved/borderline livid at my SLP
I'm sorry this happened, and you're right, it's totally unacceptable!!
We had a VERY similar situation when my DS started speech last year, the SLP was chronically late, chronically "out" for the day (so lots of makeup sessions and juggling things). I let it go on for about 2 months, but then I had had it, I called our coordinator and said I think we need to change SLPs. They didn't even ASK why/what the problem was and to think I stressed for *weeks* thinking I was going to get her in trouble back at HQ. Her replacement is SO different it's like night and day. Ultra professional and consistent, never cancels last minute, and I can count on one hand the # of sessions we've had to makeup or switch due to illness over the past 10 months. So glad I switched - should've done it sooner. Don't even sweat it if you want to make a change, the agency will take care of it and you can get DS on a more consistent schedule!

Please don't let one bad apple spoil the whole bunch...every field has bad apples though. Call the coordinator and get a new one right away!

Re: I am peeved/borderline livid at my SLP
I am an EI provider as well and I am sorry you have had to deal with this! Totally unacceptable. If for some reason a parent isn't at home when I arrive. I ALWAYS call their cell and home. If I can't get in touch with them I wait 10 minutes and then leave.
If this is something that is has been going on I would call the coordinator and ask for someone new. Your provider should be making this as easy as possible for you, it is hard enough having someone come into your home on a weekly basis.

Ugghh, it's not so easy. 1st, I need a bilingual SLP which are apparently not so easy to find. And then, my DS does not do well with most new people and it's taken a good 4 weeks for him to be ok with me leaving the room and to engage with this SLP. I really like how she works with him and she seems really knowledgable but today had me incredibly upset. I guess I'll address it with her.

Thanks for this. Yeah, it's not easy having someone in your home like that. I think that it's great that you understand that. Glad to know I wasn't crazy for thinking she should have called.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE our SLP! She's great. Not one complaint at all.
Call your coordinator and make a switch.
I was so nervous telling my DDs ongoing who I did NOT want for our SLP and it was no problem at all. I LOVE my DDs team!

Re: I am peeved/borderline livid at my SLP
I am a SEIT and would NEVER do something like that. Your scheduled time is 4:30 on the paper you have. Even if you agreed to 4:15 she should have called your cell or waited around for a bit. Our company policy is we must wait atleast 15 minutes and if the kid does not show, we can leave. I usually always wait a half hour and in that half hour am making calls trying to get in touch with the parent.
I do not know how it works out here, but by me in the city if the kid is out, it is marked as an absence and does not need to be made up and I still get paid, however, she should not have left, so do not let her get you to sign off that it was an absence on your part. Make her make up the session and save her note. If she gives you trouble, call her agency. That is total BS and I would make it clear to her how mad you are and that from now on you expect her there at 4:30.
