Re: Brightwaters?
I don't live there but it is Bay Shore SD. We definitely would have bought there if we could have found something in our price range. I would not have been worried about buying in Bay Shore SD - it has phenomenal programs and was probably one of the first integrated schools on Long Island. I know many attorneys, hedge fund managers and Drs. who went through the Bay Shore public school system.

Re: Brightwaters?
I have two coworkers who live there and they both love the area AND the schools.
We work in an affluent SD and one often says that she wishes our SD did this or that like Bay Shore.

Thank you. I went to Bay Shore High School and am immensely proud.
I lived in West Bay Shore.. right on the other side of the golf course from Brightwaters.. spent tons of time there - it is a cute little village. Pain in the backside with parking rules though. My experience is that most of the kids I grew up with in Brightwaters went to Bay Shore schools with me. There are always a few private school kids but even a lot of the St. Pat's kids went to BSHS after 8th grade.

Re: Brightwaters?
Make sure you are not buying any area affected by the toxic plume, its in and out especially in the Lawrence Farms areas

There apparently hasn't been a tax increase in years (there was a recent article in newsday about this) they plan their spending carefully.
I live in Brightwaters, but I rent, it's such a nice area. The people are so friendly, the houses all have so much character and charm and the area is so well maintained. When we go for walks (very, very walkable area) people wave and say hi.. and it has a great little downtown area. If we were going to stay on LI, we would try to buy in Brightwaters.

My mom's old boss lived in Brightwaters forever, and always has good things to say about the town AND about the school district.

DH and I just purchased our first home in Brightwaters...it is Bayshore school districts! Actually before even signing the contract I research the area and Bay shore happened to be an award winning school district. Being that I have a 7 year old and a 7 month old I signed the contract! we've been living there for about 3 weeks and 1/2 and we absolutely in love with our house and the area. I do advice you though the taxes are pretty high but if you can do it GO FOR IT....Good Luck

Re: Brightwaters?
I still strongly advise to make absolute sure the property is not on an area affected y the toxic plume. I grew up there and we had no idea until the Health Department came to test after I called when i read the article in the NY Times. They just sold a house on my street that is contaminated

I believe you can't buy anything in the effected area at this point. I don't think it actually runs into Brightwaters at all though.. it effects a mile long strip from Lanier (just east of Brightwaters) down to Garner lane behind Friendly's.

Re: Brightwaters?
Yes I grew up on Lanier and I stay here a lot at my Mothers. many houses are for sale on this street and they sold one a few months ago. One of the sellers has een very vocal about his house being contaminated in the press yet it is still for sale. The private school and ay are also topics of controversy I dont understand myself how they can sell it. Another girl I went to HS had her mothers house on Community bought out from being contaminated (near 5thAvenue) she has being trying to be part of that large class action suit because her mother died of cancer

Re: Brightwaters?
We get the map from the gas company outlining the plume areas. I know it is south of Orinoco Dr/Union and East of Windsor.

If they are allowed to sell they do have to disclose.

This. I <3 Brightwaters. We plan to look there when we sell our current home in a few years. I'd willingly commute to my job in Queens if it meant I got to live there.
DH is a teacher in the district, and thinks it's wonderful. Great SpEd and accelerated programs with a very diverse student body. The long-time superintendent just retired, so I hope her replacement doesn't ruin all the gains made by the district over the past 10-15 years.
