Re: How religious are you?

I chose "very religious" but I don't know if I really think of myself that way. I do attend church every Sunday, sing in the choir and teach Sunday school, BUT in my personal beliefs I don't adhere 100% to the church. I focus more on Jesus' social justice message, so I'm really progressive on social justice issues, etc.

After I spent time learning more about organized religion, and personal religion, I feel bad for those who are religious, and it gives me so much peace not being religious. It gives life much more sense to me.

Why do you feel bad for those who are religious?

As I was posting it, I realized how it might be perceived. I was just using the exact same language as the person I quoted.

No, I totally see what you mean. Just as leighdvm (and obviously billions of others) finds peace in religion, and feels bad for people who don't feel that same peace (which I find totally understandable), you find peace simply in this life, without religion, and you feel bad for people who don't feel that kind of peace (also totally understandable in my book).

I understood it this way also

I'm moderately I guess, because I do go to Mass each week, follow holidays for their religious meaning and I do send my kids to Catholic school. I don't believe in some of the Church's stance on things, like birth control, etc.

I put very religious but that is in comparison to people like my friends. Compared to my parents I am a heathen Chat Icon

I attend church every Sunday, pray every day, do the rosary pretty regularly, go to confession once a year, fast on Fridays during lent, no meat on Fridays year round (this I break for special occasions) and I believe in about 98% of what my Church preaches.

Re: How religious are you?

I am a practicing Catholic. I don't know that I am "very" religious. I feel connected to my faith, I attend church, I observe holidays, my child(ren) will receive their sacraments and attend CCD (religious instruction).

There are views that I disagree with.

It seems like less and less people have religion in their lives nowadays......I find it sad (and I don't mean this in an insulting way to anyone!)....it gives me so much peace that I can't imagine not having it and feel bad for those who do not experience it.

I am not responding to be defensive or to start any debate...just to give you my perspective.

I can completely understand your feelings b/c I have people in my life that feel the same.

For me I was raised with a lot of religion and for me that made me have a lot of fear and guilt. For me it never brought me peace. Over the past 10-15 years I have moved more and more away from the church and now completely away from any kind of religion and I feel that I finally have peace in my life. I am content to raise my children without God and religion. What they decide as adults is their free choice but for my DH and I we don't wish to influence their decisions.

Again, this is no kind of attack on religious people or the peace they feel from it. I just wanted to explain how I get peace from not having religion b/c of the unrest religion, God and the church brought me.

Just to give the flip side of this, I have a close friend who said she was often very frightened as a child becuase she was raised without any religion or real belief in God. She said she would frequently worry about what happens when you die or bad things happen becuase she had nothing to "comfort" her. She actually says she's angry that her parents chose to raise her like this. I guess it can go either way for people.

For myself, I answered Moderately Religious, but probably should have said Somewhat Religious. I was raised Catholic, believe only some of their views and only attend Mass occasionally. DH and I do intend to start bringing DD to Mass weekly once she's old enough to understand. I do consider myself to be more spiritual and pray several times a week.

Re: How religious are you?

I voted Somewhat Religious. I grew up in a Kosher home, but my own home is not Kosher. I observe the "major" holidays including Passover. I don't go to Temple but I was brought up to believe that "G-d is everywhere" and I do feel that connection.

When I had more free time I volunteered as an advisor for a Jewish teen leadership program and many of my closest friends are people I met when I was a member of that group in high school.

This subject reminds me of a book I read many summers ago. The author spoke at a camp where I was working.

The book is called:
"How to Get More Out of Being Jewish
Even If:
A. You are not sure you believe in God;
B. You think going to synagogue is a waste of time;
C. You think keeping kosher is stupid;
D. You hated Hebrew school; or
E. All of the above!"

Not at all religious, but I strongly believe in the fact that there is "something bigger" than us out there, which makes me somewhat spiritual, although I don't pray.

this is DH and I as well. I was raised catholic, was baptized, had my communion and confirmation, and DH wasn't. When we have a child, I will also have them baptized, but I think that's the extent of it.

I am between somewhat and moderately religious. I don't attend church that often but observe and follow all religious holidays, plan on bringing up my child/children in the church and pray everyday. I plan on going back to attending church regularly in the near future.

I was also raised to belive that God is everywhere and you don't have to actually attend church to have a relationship. I consider my Faith to be very strong even if physically I am not in church.

Re: How religious are you?

I was raised without any religion. It wasn't necessarily intentional but my parents were from different religions and both pretty agnostic so they just never decided what religion to raise us with. There are times when I have felt left out over the years because I don't belong to a religious group and wasn't raised with those teachings. What always amazes me is when people ask me how I was taught to have morals without religion. I was always taught that you should be a good person and have good morals because that's just the right thing to do.

Now that I'm older, I like that I was raised that way because I feel I have a very unique perspective. DH is actually jealous that I didn't have to go to Sunday school Chat Icon . We plan on raising our children the same way. I totally respect others' religions and their right to practice whatever they choose. Just don't try to convert me and we'll be cool Chat Icon

this was/is me too...but b/c my parents were just not religious. I grew up across the street from a church and I was definitely not jealous on Sunday mornings or when my friends had religion class!

ETA - I voted "moderately religious" simply because i don't attend mass, but Do go to church and pray on my own time, I believe the Catholic teachings, but disagree on a few of their stances (ex: gay marriage, etc)

Re: How religious are you?

As I get older I get less religious. I always say I was brainwashed by almost 18yrs of Catholic school. Dh isn't religious at all but he likes reading about all the different religions. I will raise any children I have in the catholic church bc that's all I know. And I HAD to get married in a Catholic church bc I honestly wouldn't have felt married if I wasn't agin brainwashing.

I pray and say my prayers bc it makes me feel better but we don't go to church unless its for an event.

My biggest pet peeve is people who justify hatred and killing or being ignorant bc of their beliefs. Calling others evil because they are gay, live together, don't cover their faces and I can go and on bc of what is written in a book is the ultimate level of ignorance to me. Scientology was a work of fiction that turned into a religion, honestly all of our bibles were written by men years ago when everything was wrong how do we know that our bible wasn't once a work of fiction that creative people through together.

Just because I'm not religious doesn't mean I don't believe in anything. I believe in learning and wisdom, I believe in human kindness and morality, I believe that we're all connected and then there is a basic goodness in all of us. In my opinion, my belief in humanity is not inferior to your belief in God.

Re: How religious are you?

I picked very religious. I am a Methodist. I consider myself more religious then most of my friends and some of my family.
I have attended the same church with my Grandfather and many other family members for over 25 years. I am invested in that church. It is a second home for me.
I attend church almost every week. I pray daily, sometimes a few times a day. I also listen to religious podcast weekly.

I'd venture to guess she meant religious beliefs since that's the topic...not just any belief in anything.

Just wanted to add... a person can have a belief in humanity and in God, of course. I believe in learning, wisdom, kindness, and the other qualities that you mentioned, but I believe in God as well.

Can you please point out a place where someone on here was confusing these two things? I don't see that at all. ETA I see one person who mentions religious extremists, but I still don't think that she's confusing the two.

Well, that's fine but my point still stands. I don't think my belief is humanity is inferior to your belief in humanity + religion, and I don't find it sad that some people only have a belief in religion. I'm not saying either of you doesn't have a right to your own point of view, I'm just sharing my differing one.

Re: How religious are you?

I picked moderately religious. I'm Catholic. I haven't been to church in about 1.5 months. DH & I are going to start going back every week this upcoming Sunday.

We follow the traditions (no meat on Fridays during Lent for example), we both take something positive out of each and every Mass we go to, and we make sure to celebrate the religious significance of Christmas & Easter. We both pray frequently. I said moderately as opposed to very because I don't agree with every single church teaching (for example, I support gay marriage), so I don't follow all of the rules of the religion. However, I think I'm a tiny bit more than moderate.

I'm extremely spiritual though. Like I said, I pray frequently. However, I also feel very in touch with the spirit world and those who have passed on.

I was an atheist for about 5 years though.

Funny-to me you would be "very religious"
