have any of you kitty mommas had any experience with urinary blockage?
one of our little guys was diagnosed with a uti on friday and we had to take him to the emergency vet last night bc he was blocked. they wanted to keep him overnight but we just had them unblock him and brought him home (they wanted $1500 to keep him 12 hours ). i put a call in to our regular vet to see what we should do next/today and she is busy so she had her vet tech return my call and say to just keep up with the antibiotics and wait for the urine culture to come back. the emergency vet mentioned something about the pu surgery but this is his first problem and things i'm reading online are saying that the surgery is basically a last resort. i just don't want him to get blocked again
have any of you had any experience with this?

Yes I have but thankfully my little baby wasn't totally blocked. He just had these crystals that were forming in his kidneys that were painful for him to urinate. Kinda like stones but crystals just needed to be dissolved. Basically he had him on the antibiotics and he looked better and once off (after 10 days or so), he started displaying same signs again. Vet said to put him on prescription royal canin urinary SO diet. He's been on it since march and has not had any UTI episodes since! The diet food makes him thirsty and drink more so the crystals can't form. My other cat who doesn't have UTI issues eats the same food. Vet said that was okay. I order the food through petflow.com. Much cheaper than the vet and I have nothing but rave reviews about them. Just need to give them the script from your vet.
HTH!!! And hope kitty gets better real soon. I know how upsetting all this can be

that's what the vet put him on! he ate it for dinner friday night then didn't eat at all yesterday and just had a few bites this morning. he's on pain meds and antibiotics so he's pretty groggy, but i'm just worried he'll block again and i really hope that doesn't happen

Re: have any of you kitty mommas had any experience with urinary blockage?
Yes. We had a male cat who had two blockages in one week. He was in so much pain and almost died. I then had the PU surgery performed by Dr. Marino in the LIVS in Plainview. I had the surgery done in 2001. The cat had no problems but did have to be put to sleep in 2010 for bowel disease. Obviously, I was glad I got the surgery because the cat lived a long time.
I should add that I always fed the cat food which was for urinary issues. I also avoided any fish based foods because it was bad for cats with his problem.

We have a cat who had an almost fatal build up in his kidneys a few years ago. His kidneys almost entirely shut down in a very short amount of time. He went through the surgery (He was about 1-1.5 years old at the time), and he is doing fine now.

Re: have any of you kitty mommas had any experience with urinary blockage?
Yes, I had a cat that kept constantly getting blocked and it was $300 each time to unblock him. He was constantly in pain so we did the surgery. This was years ago, I think it was around $1500 or so??? It was definitely under $2000. However, he was never the same again and wouldn't use the litterbox after the surgery. He was peeing all over the house. I don't know if that had anything to do with the surgery or it was just coincidental.
