Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
Hi girls!
Sorry to be crashing, but I had a couple of questions, and right now, you are the experts!
DH and I will be TTC in October. We have a cruise planned for January, and were hoping to swim with dolphins (something I've ALWAYS wanted to do), go on a Jeep 4x4 Adventure, and a water park. If I got pregnant right away, I'd be about 3 months, and I pretty much know the Jeep thing would be out. Do anyone of you know about the dolphins or certain rides at the water park?? Since swimming with dolphins is something I may not have the opportunity to do again, I'd be willing to put off TTC until after.
Thanks!

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
Sorry... it's a tough one.
Normally, I'd say just TTC and have fun...
BUT, you will def not be allowed to go to the water park, 4X4 Jeep ride, and not be allowed to swim with dolphins if 3-4 months preggo. You can check with the tour company. Not to mention no drinking & having to stay away from lots of food. Whether you chose to follow recommendations or not is your decision.
I had stayed at a really nice, all inclusive resort & couldn't do much at all when I was 11 weeks preggo with DS.
You may also have morning sickness & be pretty miserable.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
I think the swimming with the dolphins is fine. The Jeep thing, no. The water park, probably just lazy river type of stuff.
I would keep in mind the fact that you MIGHT get morning sickness, and that COULD last into your 4th month. I just cancelled my vacation for next week because of it. I'm just too exhausted and nauseous to spend all of that money on a vacation that I won't enjoy. Something to consider.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
I would say go for it!
I HOPE you get pregnant right away but there is no guaranty that it happens when we want it to happen and you may still be TTC in February. AGAIN- HOPE THIS ISN'T THE CASE!
I was in a similar situation. Booked a vacation for this past february and expected we would be pregnant by then....didn't happen until March. Maybe the vacation relaxed me....I had a wonderful time with DH and glad we went!
In the event you are pregnant, just alter your activities accordingly. Maybe wait until closer to the cruise to book excursions. Good luck.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
Perhaps I am a bad role model, but I dont think those activities would be definitite nonos, including the dolphins. You can see how you feel by then but its really a personal decision about whether you are willing to wait to ttc or take the chance that you may get preggers before hand and not feel up to the trip itself (esp a cruise) or some of the activities. If you decide to go for it, maybe get insurance just in case you do get preggo and you really dont feel up to a vacay =)
DH and I started "trying" in Jan. Then we planned a spontaneous last hurrah vacation for March so we took off from "trying" in feb bc I wanted to enjoy the all inclusive , activirties, drinks, etc etc. We went back to trying on our vacation in march and thats where/when/how I got pregnant. I was willing to give up one month of ttc but I personally wouldnt have held off longer than that for the sole reason of being able to go on vacay. -- but that was just based on my circumstance.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
You can swim but not sure how active swimming with dolphins are. Jeep and most water park rides are not recommended.
There are lots of other vacation possibilities though. You say its a cruise- where is it taking off from? What I would do since usually you can book a cruise last minute for cheap!- the issue is airfare is generally more money closer to day of departure. I'd book the plane now to say FL (where ever the cruise departure is) and plan a FL (or where ever) vacation - if you're not pregnant a month before I'd book the cruise. If you are not picky about hotels you don't need to book anything in FL other than the airfare. I never make reservations and always manage to find something decent.
Age my be another factor to you. Early 20s- I'd wait 6 months to try -and have a ball in the meantime. If at an age that you're worried about waiting I'd start now.
Keep in mind you could have MS for several months. I am 4 months today and although MS is mostly better overall I am not myself - still not sleeping well, peeing often, starving but nothing is appetizing and queasy at times.
I vacationed quite a bit before TTC and glad I did.
good luck!

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
Irrelevant to waiting to TTC, I booked a vacation in March for June and 2 wks after booking the vacation found out I was pregnant. I said that if I had known I was going to be pregnant, I would not have booked the vacation. After going on the vacation, I definately would have cancelled if I knew then what I know now. I wanted to go jet skiing, scuba, kayaking, zip lining, etc. We stayed at an all inclusive for the food and drinks. Not that I am a heavy drinker, but it was a vacation. I could not do any of it and I am definately not a person that is content to sit in a chair on the beach. I want action. Only you can decide what is right for you, but if you would not be happy to forgo the things that you want to do, then I would hold off on TTC. But you would have to be comfortbale with that decision too.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
just want to echo a sentiment expressed by pp..... if you ARE pregnant on your vacation and are that early along, you might have morning sickness and trust me - it can ruin a vacation. we went away to vermont when I was 7-8w, and it was THE WORST vacation of my life!!! i was so sick the entire time, and the thought of vermont makes me want to vomit still!
this was just my experience, but something to consider.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
I've alway heard absolutely not, no way, no how is swimming with dolphins allowed while pregnant. Do a google search and read up on it. Call ahead to the travel agent.
To me.... not worth it.
The water park you'll probably be restricted from most of the impact type rides.
The Jeep 4x4 depends. Some are just Jeeps tours with no real bumps, others are hard core. Again, I'd check with the agent.
As for the PP commenting about morning sickness, I didn't have any of that so I say go and enjoy the rest of your trip.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
We just went away in July and at the time I was 17 weeks. I was not allowed any rides (water or amusement), no jeep safari tour because it was too bumpy, no jet ski's, tubing, etc. All I was allowed to do was relax -- which was fine by me!

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
I would think you could swim with dolphins, I know when I did it the instructor said that since dolphins have sono radar they can actually see the baby and will stay away! The other 2 things I would stay away from, or even ask the doctor

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
I know you can snorkel, and cruises only allow you to go up to 24 weeks. Swimming with the dolphins is a no no.
I went on a cruise pregnant (15 weeks) so you might also want to take into account that you may or may not be really sea sick with the extra hormones. Get sea bands!

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
Can you look these things up on line or call them to find out about their pregnancy policies?

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
Just an FYI most cruise lines wont let you cruise if you are more than 20-22 weeks pregnant
You need a letter from a doctor stating how far along you are, etc and what your due date is
They dont want to have a baby emergency in the middle of the ocean with not alot of medical access

Thanks for all the responses!!! I didn't even think about factoring in the possibility of morning sickness!! Definitely gives me a lot to think about now!

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
you can't swim with dolphins pregnant. something about human pregnancy makes dolphins really excited. due to the liability involved no place will let a pregnant woman swim with dolphins.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
The place I swam with the dolphins said no to pregnant women. They mentioned that they can hear two heartbeats and it upsets them (or something like that). Not 100% why, but they definitely didn't allow it.

Re: Pregnancy vacation no-nos??
I never suffered from M/S but I got super queasy on boats and cars when I was newly pregnant, just something to think about. if you do plan the trip buy trip insurance. I always buy it from insuremytrip.com and its pretty cheap. they actually have plans that allow you to cancel for any reason. if you have it and you feel sick, you can cancel and get your money back. something to think about

See, clearly I was 100 percent wrong about the dolphin thing... The best person to consult is your doc!
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!!!
