Middle School teachers....
i NEED a new firsat day of school activity. Im going into my 13th year and have done the SAME thing all these yrs and im SO bored of it.
Any ideas for first/second day would be great

Charter As a first step to implementing The RULER Approach, students and their teachers, school leaders and their staff, and families develop Charters—a joint mission statement for the learning and working environment they pledge to maintain. The focus is on how each stakeholder wants to feel, what needs to happen for those feelings to be present consistently, guidelines for handling uncomfortable feelings and conflict, and methods for creating and sustaining a positive climate.
This program is really meant for whole school/district, but it might be interesting to try in your class?

I do "Find Someone Who..." as an ice breaker for the class. Each kid gets a sheet with the same list of items "Went to a Met game this summer, has a blue car, has a birthday in April, etc" I think there are 16 of them. They have to find someone who it's true for and have them sign their name next to the item. They can't have the same person sign more than once. It's fun to watch them interact. I give them 20-25 minutes, then give a 2 minute warning. The 3 highest scores get a reward. You can then kill more time by leading into a short class discussion about what they learned about each other, etc. Anything to take the spotlight off of me those 1st couple of days is golden!

i do this exactly!!! i call it the meet and greet. i mix up the items between academic and non-academic and sit back and watch. you can learn A LOT from how the kids interact on the first day. i dont give prizes though  then we do a share out for a little bit and i share some stories about myself as well. the kids always really like it and you can learn some really interesting tidbits.
other things i use:
- have ever broken a bone
-went on vacation this summer
-was born in a different country
- read all the books from the summer reading list (i dont care since im a math teacher, just curious, lol)
- have/had a sibling that attending this school
- has a green backpack
- knows where the nurses office is
- has a birthday in november
- plays an instrument
- favorite subject is science
etc

You have some good ones on your list! I love watching them, too. The kids who are leaders emerge quickly. Some try to figure out a better and quicker system for finding people. It's a lot of fun. I'm going to take a couple of your topics for this year's!

I have used this one a few years in a row with my 7th graders and they really seem to like it.
I bring in a new, unopened roll of toilet paper. I tell them to pass the roll around and take as many squares as they want. (They usually ask why and what it is for, but don't tell them!) When everyone has some squares and the roll is back on my desk I tell them to count their squares. For every square they have, they have to share one fact about themselves. It is a great ice breaker!
The kids usually take between 3-4 squares, some take 1 or 2..one year I had a student take 15, it took awhile for him to get through all 15 squares but it ended up being a class effort and really got them interacting with each other.

I like this!
You can also use a large poster sized graph paper to make crossword puzzles using all your names. Start with yours and have the kids come up and add their name one by one. In the end, it should all work out. It's an instant decoration too!
