Hey Waterspout- Hurricane question
Right now Katiya is in the Atlantic.
Is there a way to find out what the models are for the projected heading?
Basically, how soon can we tell when a hurricanes path MIGHT be, or what they THINK it MIGHT do?
MIGHT is be a on a track for New York? Or maybe the Carolinas? Florida?
Just curious since I have no idea how to read the NOAA maps and info.

When will we have a better idea? well more accurate idea? I cant go through that again!!!
She is a long way away. Will know better as days go on. Nothing is typically set til 5 days in advance. It's just something to keep an eye on.
From THIS thread.

Re: Hey Waterspout- Hurricane question
The only reason I possibly know what Katia is doing is because all the weather blah, blah that steers a hurricane. (Way too much stuff to fully explain here, but an overall weather pattern across the western atlantic and eastern half of the US) I really wouldn't worry unless you see a path taking her close to the Island of Puerto Rico. If that is in the 5 day forecast, then stay tuned. If she is pretty north of there, then she will just anger the fish of the atlantic. (as of the past 12 hours, she seems to be curving north, which is good)
Way too soon to tell. It's just tough when weather patterns are still showing that brought Irene here. Chances are slim, but it is still something to watch.

Re: Hey Waterspout- Hurricane question
I'm no meteorologist like Kelly, but there is no way to tell at this point where it will go. There are too many factors to play into the track, and also it is very far away from the mainland U.S. right now. As of today it is not a threat to any land.
You can use these models to give you an idea of where it might go.
There is the NWS "cone" map. This one shows you the strength they think the storm will be up to 5 days in advance, and also where it might go. The white area is for the next 3 days so the path is a bit more predictable. The shaded part is for days 4-5, so it is less predictable and therefore wider.
Then there is the "spaghetti" model. This one shows the different possible paths the storm could take. The area that as the most lines would be the most probable track.
So for TS Katia, it will probably become a hurricane some time tomorrow. But it is in the middle of the Atlantic ocean so is no threat to land as of now.

SO excited that many of you read the maps!!!!!!!! Then again, I know you have two meteorologists on your hands.
ANd yes, that is the map to watch. If Puerto Rico gets into the 'possibility cone', be more concerned.

I'm a bit obsessed with reading the maps, you know its bad when your 2 year olds tell you we need to check the radar when it starts getting cloudy! Oh and M had a shirt that has flowers on it that kind of looks like a radar image I guess and she calls it her "thunder shirt." LOL.

I've been following these maps as well. Really cool historic tracks as well, plus you can zoom in down to the street level.

I still use noaa as the primary, but these maps are more detailed.

I would think it needs to get a bit closer before it hooks and turns back out to sea....There are wind and water currents in that area that can change things.
