Re: Reporting illegal apartments in Franklin Square
Sadly, we are going to see more and more of these as more and more people either lose their homes or have no other choice but to rent an illegal apartment to keep afloat. I know several families (some are single mothers) had to convert and rent apartments in their homes that aren't exactly legal. It's very sad. Not saying that is the case with who you want to report. Call the Town.

I understand, but I own my home and have to deal with a house across the street where about 10 people live with 7 cars. I dont see how that is fair. I feel terrible for people who have lost jobs, but I am not well of either. My husband works his butt off to afford our home while I am home with our newborn. I have to pay taxes and i dont feel like I should have to park down the block and walk with my baby when there are people renting illegaly parking in front of my house, half way in my driveway sometimes. Its just not going to happen. Thanks everyone.

I should have worded it a bit better. I do not know your particular situation so I did not mean to offend you. Of course you should report them, that is outrageous. I have a very good friend who is thisclose to defaulting on her mortgage due to job lose so she is agonizing over renting the downstairs of her home. It's killing her. Again, I didn't mean to offend.

No worries. Someone like that I wouldnt not have a problem with. This house is too much. They hit my car and denied it, they park a foot in my driveway...its just too much. There are definitley other houses near me that rent illegaly..but never had an issue with, so I dont care. I should have worded it better also....I woudl never report unless I had a reason. I am not that mean

Can you put parking cones in front of your house? A friend of mine does this because she lives near a temple and they always park in front of her home

I'm pretty sure we have the same issue on our block.
Overnight, they have 2 - 3 cars parked in the driveway and about 4 - 5 cars parked in the street.
If you call...is it anonymous?

I just moved to FS area.. i live 1 block south of Stewart Manor off NHP Rd. I havent seen any of this either, but I am right next to Stewart Manor where you are not allowed to park on the street at all...and not in the heart of town. That does totally stink!!!

That's illegal. You don't own the spot.

Re: Reporting illegal apartments in Franklin Square
I'd call the Town (Town of Hempstead?) give specific addresses.
I had that issue in my previous neighborhood - only reason it really bothered me was all the extra cars in the street! SO friggin annoying.

Re: Reporting illegal apartments in Franklin Square
so sorry you're dealing with this. my inlaws, also in FS, have the same exact situation across the street from them too. we lived in a (legal) apartment in IL's house before we bought our house and I couldn't wait to get out of there. the parking situation was OUT OF CONTROL!
good luck!

OMG...I have no clue where in FS you live, but this is NOTHING like by me at ALL. There are usually like 3 cars parked on my entire street at any given time.
Again...this is in the Dogwood Estates section...if you are in FS north of the turnpike (which is pretty far from me- FS is a HUGE town), then it is definitely more crowded.

Re: Reporting illegal apartments in Franklin Square
Wow, I didn't realize "that side" was considered estates. I grew up in FS and have noticed the increased # of cars per home as well. I agree, call the town. They will give the owner a warning and an opportunity to make the apt legal if possible before imposing a fine.

OMG growing up in FS you could barely drive down Willow Road b/c of all the cars parked on the road. TONS of illegal apartments in that area.

Simma down Val!
I lived in 4 apts in FS when I first moved to LI. 3 of the 4 were illegal. The 3rd was the last! The house was an estate house. The guy's grandmother's. He "fixed" (boy do I use that term loosely!) & made it into THREE apts. We lived on the main floor for 2 miserable years. In that time he had THREE different tenants upstairs & THREE different tenants downstairs aka basement. It was a nightmare. Heck I felt like calling the town on him - thankfully the neighbors did and we were all evicted. To be honest - I think the guy still rents it out. I'm just glad I got out of there into a legal apt - right down the road from Val.
One illegal was north of Hempstead Tpke. The other two were south of Hempstead.
To be honest, I think 90% of FS is illegal apts.

they live near croxleys, north of the tpke, near tulip. its so difficult to park there even when we go visit. it doesn't help that one of the neighbors has a handicapped parking space/signs in front of her house, which is never used... don't know how she got it but she isn't handicapped - she just doesn't like ppl parking in front of her house. drives me INSANE. but in any event it takes up space that could fit one or maybe 2 cars.
