Touro College- Special Ed

Did anyone get their special ed certification through Touro? I know all I need is 4 classes. I wanted to do all of these classes online...has anyone taken them online. If not, did you take them at Bay Shore? Any suggestions on professors?

Also, what do you think about taking all 4 classes this semester? I am not working this year...I do have 3 children, but could do the work at night...thanks!

Re: Touro College- Special Ed

I went to touro college for my masters in special education. I did take a few classes on-line and the most at the bayshore campus.

I personally had a really good experience with Touro. I felt it was afforable and I really liked all my professors. I think all the professors I had were working teachers or retired teachers from both Long Island and NYC schools. Which to me was very helpful because they gave a lot of first hand advice!

The on-line classes were okay. I say that because I think it depends on your learning style. I am more of an in person learner then do everything on your own. I also thought that on-line was a lot more work because instead of having oral discussions you had to write out your thoughts on topics and have discussions with your classmates- most professors excepct meaningful and thoughtful input from each student. Not just a one work or line answers. This is on top of your daily work. With that being said- it is so flexable. Everything is usually due on Sunday but you have that whole week to do it and can hand it in early. You can work in the morning or at night whenever you have free time. But if you decide to take 4 classes my advice would be to schedule everything and not leave to the last minute on Sunday. You will get stressed!

I know how I am, and a lot of times I would leave things to the last minute. The in person classes I think are 3 hours once a week. Honestly its a big bulk of your time and if you did take 4 classes that would be M-Th being away from home. Maybe you can take 2 in person and 2 online? I think four classes is do-able but it might be hard. I think the most I have taken is 3 at a time.

Good Luck!!

thanks so much for your input...are their any teachers you would recommend, or avoid!

That's a great idea about 2 in person, 2 online....not sure if all 4 is doable right now though...have to really think it out!

I think I have to take 670, 635, 640 and 602...any advice you can offer on these...

Thanks so much!!

ETA:Do you know if they offer winter intersession classes?

670 in person is Prof. Alexander and she is my favorite professor and that was by far the most useful class I took. if you can take that one in person I highly advice doing it.

635 & 640- I don't remember taking these classes

602- I took that class online. I don't remember who my professor was. That might be a good class to take on line. I see that prof Alexander is teaching that class too- it might be something to think about taking in person. However if you are to take only one class in person I would do 670.

I am not sure about the winter session but you can ask when you register.

Re: Touro College- Special Ed

thanks again...I was def. considering taking 670 in person...it seems like the most in depth one, and I think I will gain alot from taking it in person...Im not positive about 635 and 640, I just think those are the ones I am supposed to take..I will check into it!

Thanks again!!!

http://www.nysut.org/elt.htm is where you can find the courses...

My husband's masters is in Elementary/Middle Childdhood Education. He was told he needs 4 more courses by the state.. we just aren't sure WHICH 4 through TOURO... but NYSUT was clear on which ones through their courses.
