Some breastfeeding questions
Hi, I'm 27w pregnant with . As I'm getting closer now I have a million going through my mind. My plan is to try to breastfeed the babies. We'll see how it goes. A few questions.
1. I was going to buy the Medela Freestyle for pumping, but I heard that it's better to rent the hospital pump because it's more powerful? Experiences? Does anyone know if NS Manhasset rents pumps? Any one know how much it is?
2. Some people have said in the beginning not to give them anything else (pacis, formula, etc.). I don't think the paci can be avoided because we are having them circumcised and from what I understand they give them soothies (which is fine with me).
But others have said it's fine, let the hospital take them at night and give them formula. I've been told I'm going to be so exhausted and won't have a break once we leave, so just bf during the day and at night try to get some sleep.
Any advice anyone can offer? I'm so confused.

Re: Some breastfeeding questions
Oh I should add we are taking a breastfeeding class at the hospital next week, so hopefully that will help ease my mind too.

Re: Some breastfeeding questions
I EBFd my DS for 15 months before the twins. Never took a class. Never supplemented or gave binkys.
With the girls I gave them formula throughout my hospital stay, mostly for 1 night feeding so I'd have a longer stretch. I was having a hard time getting out of bed to get them from their bassinets because of the incision.
Gave them binkies they day we got home (hospital didn't offer them ). But when we got home I stopped ALL supplementing of formula. I do feel as though Katelyn had some nipple confusion and it did cause a bad latch (around 6 weeks old). Juliana didn't have that problem at all.
By 8 weeks we were smooth sailing and that is when I started pumping. I wouldn't buy a pump until you know you are going to stick with BFing. Its a large investment and cannot be returned. I had my pump already from DS. It's the Madela Pump In Style (bought in 2008).
We are now 5 months in and I still love BFing. I will leave bottles (pumped BM) for DH to give if I'm not around, but other than that they are EBF.

Re: Some breastfeeding questions
I only bfed my twins for 6 months but think I can answer some of your questions!
My babies were in the NICU so I started pumping the day after my c section every 3 hours all day!
I wouldn't buy a pump right away. I used the hospitals and then when I was discharged I rented a hospital grade one for a month. my hospital ran out of them so I rented it from BRU. I needed to have a pump right away because they were in the NICU.
I gave them pacis right from the start. They liked them but couldn't keep them in their mouths on their own. They also had formula until my milk came in. They never had any nipple confusion. They went from bottle to breast without an issue.
I highly suggest getting a my breast friend twin pillow. It was the best way to nurse them together and it was a life saver!!
Good luck!
eta: if your hospital has a LC use her!!! ask her lots of questions and have her show you how to feed them together. I am sure I could have done it on my own but she eased my mind alot!!

Ditto to this, also!!
I didn't love the LC consultant at the hospital. But she was able to give me enough of a "refresher" and I was able to get the girls to latch on my own.
However, I had one nurse that was AMAZING. She actually got the girls to tandem nurse when they were 3 days old! I waited until they were about 2 weeks to attempt that again. But once I got the hang of it, nursing them together is much easier and takes a lot less time.
The my breast friend pillow is great for tandem nursing. It's much firmer then a regular boppy and can therefore actually "hold" the baby while you concentrate on the latch.
