So completely hurt (FB is evil related)

Earlier today, I posted a FB status that I needed to take a break from the 9/11 coverage so I was going to go to yoga.

After I got out of yoga class, I looked at my phone and read where my 31-year-old cousin and aunt (his mother) proceeded to go on and on on my status, calling me "unamerican" and "disrespectful to the first responders" because "I" needed to take a break.

My aunt then proceeded to bash me through messages when I got defensive about their comments, told me "I" needed to "get over it" that I was acting "immature" etc. etc. etc.

I am completely embarassed because there were about 15 responses to this (mostly my friends and sister defending me).

I was out for most of the day so only now have been able to remove the post completely. (I tried to remove from my phone but it wouldn't let me).

I am just so upset by this.

I was in Manhattan, on 15th st. on 9/11.

I saw the towers fall from my work window.

I walked home alone over the 59th st. bridge.

I had no friends or family with me during that time.

I can't get over how rude they were to me and that they are turning this around on me, that "I" need to get over it.

I don't know what my point is for posting.

I always have heard people say that FB is evil, and now I can totally see that. I am seriously thinking of deleting my page.

I feel violated which is I guess the right word.

I have friends and work colleagues on there and I don't want them to see this nonsense.

I am also disgusted that this is FAMILY who are behaving this way.

Thanks for listening if you've made it this far. My cousin and his father are volunteer firemen (NOT in NYC) if that makes any difference. My aunt in one of her drama posts said that my cousin showed my post to the men at the firehoused and "they" were all offended.

FWIW, I showed the page to my FIL earlier, a retired NYPD who was at Ground Zero for 6 months after the attack and he wanted to respond that they were acting f*cked up to me.

FWIW I think yoga is a perfectly appropriate way to spend time on a day like today. I don't really have any wonderful words of wisdom other than that some people are blinded but what *they* think is the 'best' way to deal with a situation and can't see that everyone handles things like this differently. I highly doubt a group of volunteer firefighters in another city were offended by your practice of yoga today - it sounds like your aunt was being very melodramatic.

Maybe make your status updates visible only to certain people? I have done that and have found it made my facebook experience significantly less dramatic.

Nobody has any right to tell you how to feel. You have every right to feel the way you do.

Can you just block them from your FB account, but still keep it for coworkers and other family members?

I think the moral of the story is that everyone handles things differently and people just need to get over themselves!

I am so sorry. This is why I wont join Facebook. Too many opinions, too many high horses, and lots of opportunity for trouble.

As I posted on another thread...we are family of someone who perished on 9.11. And even WE dont feel comfort in watching most of the programs. Everyone deals with pain and loss in their own way. That is our right, we are all different and individual in how we suffer. Some of us prefer to suffer silently.

I don't know what to suggest to you in regards to closing your account. I would hate for you to close it b/c of this.

My response to them was that I had decided to dedicate my practice today to those affected by this tragedy, and that before posting such rotten things about me, they should have asked for clarification.

I was so pi$$ed that I deleted both of them (they friend requested me right back) and that had also lead to the non-stop nasty messages.

If anything I am going to take a break from there for awhile and really think before I post ANYTHING on that site again.

I feel your pain and anger

Last week the same think happened to me- I wrote a status about how my co-workers were setting up their classrooms all labor day weekend b/c we had construction in our building and people who think teachers have it made need to shut up.
We MY aunt who works in a school started this nasty thread about teachers complaning and how we should change our jobs if it makes us so miserable. My teacher friends all jumped on board to defend ourselves so just like you, I came back to a thread of about 20 messages. While my friends were polite and just explaining our side, she was all out nasty so I deleted her as well

I havent heard from her about it but if she says anything I will nicely tell her that I felt she wouldnt want to see my posts about how much my job sucks.

I think wanting an escape from reality is normal. It doesn't make you unpatriotic or unsympathetic or anything else.

I was horrified like everyone else was on 9/11 but I had to get back to my normal life and if I am to be condemned that I went food shopping and did "normal" things than so be it.

I was grieving today, I will never forget what happened or how I felt, but I also realize that life goes on.

Seriously?? That's absolutely ridiculous! So other people/things such as the NFL, MLB, weddings, parties, etc., but you can't go to yoga?

I think is appropriate here.

my husband and i both agree that it is time to move on. no one is asking anyone to forget.
but life goes on. we don't even like the entire plan for ground zero. Donald Trump has said years ago he would build the twin towers again in one year and with just a plaque-
not a pool to explain what happened.
there have been planes that went down in the Atlantic and we didn't drain the ocean to look for DNA
so i say that FB is not evil, it's the person behind the keyboard that don't want to change their heart or minds.

ps. we bombed japan and killed millions and now they own us financially.

NO ONE should tell you how to feel about today, whether you were closely involved or not. Shame on them
