Question re: certification when unemployed
Does anyone have experience with getting their Initial Certification extended?
I'm an unemployed teacher with 1.5 years experience. I scrambled to get a job this year but could not find one. I'm still looking, in case there are last minute vacancies, but since it's the second week of school clearly I need to assume the worst.
I need three years of experience to get my professional certification - and therefore 1.5 more years. My intial expires 2/1/2013. According to my calculations if I don't start working immediately, my initial will expire before I can get the Professional.
I tried to call the teach number and I cannot get a human on the phone. There wasn't even an option to wait on hold; they said no one was available.
Can anyone help?
TIA!

Re: Question re: certification when unemployed
I know you can file for an extension (I think on the TEACH website) for certain things.
Ex. having a baby
Mine expires 2015... I havent started working yet either.

To talk to someone, you just need to keep staying on the line and cycling through with their prompts....eventually you will get someone.
Other option is to email or call your BOCES rep.

I cycled through their menu one day for like 20 minutes and never came upon the option to speak to a human. How long do you have to keep listening to the menu?

Re: Question re: certification when unemployed
I've called several times and have spoken to someone but had to call and hang up a bunch of times but eventually someone ended up on the other line. There are different reasons you could extend and I think one of them is reduction in job. I had to extend mine as well although I did apply for a perm but they take at least three months if not more to get to your application. I applied in June and as of August they told me they were only on end of April to May applications.

Once, when I had to call I actually taught an entire class while on hold....42 minutes!!!! And it was still another 15 before I got a person...just put it on speaker and do whatever you gotta do.
I'm in the same boat as you now...I got excessed, but need to do 175 hours to maintain my professional certification. No ob=no professional development!

Re: Question re: certification when unemployed
Call you local BOCES, as someone here suggested. They have a certification office as well. I had to call a few weeks ago & couldn't get through to TEACH, but got through to BOCES in seconds.
