Generators

After several bouts of power outages I'm thinking about buying the bullet and getting a generator. I was thinking about getting one of those automatic ones that switch on and off when the power goes out and run on natural gas.

Any suggestions on brands or folks who install these things?

Keep in mind that you're looking at about $10,000 for a setup like this.....

Re: Generators

Thanks for the info. I wanted one that would just protect a few key circuits (fridge, freezer, sump pump). Is Generac the best company? that's the name I see everywhere. I was trying to shoot for $5k

Re: Generators

I would honestly look into getting a subpanel installed in the house with a few key circuits, and a manual cut-over switch wired to an outlet that can be plugged in to a portable gas generator if the power goes out. That kind of setup is around $1500 or so, and will do 90% of what you want from the big setup.

We have a Honda generator a little more money but so much quieter! We had Generac but was hard to run at night when powers out and the whole neighborhood is quiet

We have a Yamaha which is quiet too and we ran it at night. I'm looking into getting a subpanel as well just for the essentials fridge etc . just so I don't have to do the extension cord and if we ever lose electric in the cold.

You can also backfeed the panel and run things that way. You will save the cost of having the subpanel put in.

But backfeeding the entire panel means you are potentially powering the entire house. With a subpanel, it's easier to pick which circuits you want to run off the generator.

Of course, if you run the entire house, you can just be careful about turning everything off that you don't need.

Re: Generators

might want to think twice about backfeeding the panel unless you have an interlock or transfer switch.

Not only is it against code, power companies don't take nicely to it, and it is dangerious if you forget to turn off the main breaker

In an emergency situation I think being courteous goes out the window. And rightfully so in my book. I got a family to think about.

agreed, I had generator on for one night before I heard a neighbor grumbling about it... meanwhile @sswipe had a extension cord from her other neighbor, so what does she care. When power goes out, generator comes on.... deal with it.

we have one, we lost power for 5 days and literally didnt skip a beat. try long island Power in deer park they specialize in generac generators.

ours is def not quiet but honestly most of my neighbors have them so it isnt a big deal. it was $$$ but our house is big so i imagine the generator is quite big.
