Facebook to launch profile redesign
http://www.cnn.com/2011/09/20/tech/social-media/facebook-major-profile-redesign-mashable/index.html?hpt=hp_c2
(Mashable) -- Facebook plans to roll out a major redesign of user profiles at its f8 developer conference this week, Mashable has learned.
Details about the redesign are sparse, but two sources familiar with Facebook's plans (who have asked to remain anonymous) have told us that the redesign is "major" and will make Facebook profiles nexuses for consuming content.
The profile changes will be part of a wider launch, one that will include launch of a music and media platform.
Here's what we know so far about the profile redesign:
-- The redesigned profiles will be more "sticky," says one source. One of the goals of the new profiles is to get users to stay on them for longer.
-- We already knew Facebook is launching a media platform at f8. However, we've also learned that the platform -- which will include music and video from partner sites -- will display the media content a user is watching or listening to on their profiles. Essentially, when you're listening to Lady Gaga on Spotify, your friends can see and access that on your Facebook profile. This confirms a recent New York Times report.
-- The redesigned profiles are part of a larger push into social ecommerce. We don't exactly know what that means, but we've heard whispers that Facebook intends to give Facebook Credits more prominence. We've also heard that a Facebook app store may emerge at f8.
-- Facebook's push into ecommerce may be related Project Spartan, an HTML5-based mobile platform rumored to be launching soon.
Facebook is being tight-lipped about the changes; the company declined to comment on this story. However, more and more pieces of Facebook's big launch continue to leak out as the excitement builds for f8 (feel free to send us screenshots if you have any) The company is currently under lockdown, trying to fix the final bugs before Thursday's big launch.
The F8 Developer's Conference is Sept 22nd.

Not excited about this. It seems like fb is becoming a more high- tech version of myspace.

Re: Facebook to launch profile redesign
I'm sure I'm in the minority but I'm down with change if it's really for the betterment of the site and the users.
The point of social networks is to be social. It's to connect various parts of your life and have them centrally located for viewing. My only gripe would be if they didn't have settings that allowed someone to edit exactly what they want to share.

Yep I know some people who's FB page is locked down tighter than Fort Knoxx! Seriously you can't even find them in a search- so what is the point of being on if you can't even be found? Isn't the point to reconnect with people and "NETWORK"? Sometimes I think peopel think they are SO important that they need to lock their page down tighter than a celeb would.

Re: Facebook to launch profile redesign
Change is good but major change is bad. There was a change recently and even if you have everything JUST friends, if the person's wall YOU comment on is NOT only friends, people can see your comment.
Also if you block a friend from your wall, they still see some posts.
Don't believe me? Check how your page looks to the public and/or that friend.
I am for more privacy controls. I know you all think well I am on a social site..but that's social to your friends only. Would you want a stranger and/or frienemy come to your house and steal pics?
Edit: some people tighten down their controls due to their employment.

I am so done w/FB. The changes, the drama that certain ppl bring to it. If it weren't for the fact that my 92 yr old Grandma is on it , I'd delete my profile. I hope the changes dont confuse her too much.

I agree, this sort of defeats the point of social networking.
I get having stuff private so that not everyone and their mother can see your profile when you're not friends but if you are? What's the point in friending them if you don't want them to see stuff on your page?

it's an easy way to communicate w/my Grandma, multiple times through out the day.

I don't know- maybe I'm very laxed, but it doesn't bother me who sees what I write on someone's wall. If it's THAT private- I won't be putting it on a FB wall- kwim? I could always send a private message to the person if I didn't want it viewed. To me- the wall is PUBLIC- for posting public things.

Agreed but what if you worked for a company whose coworkers checks crap? It can be so innocent and read wrong. I don't but my friend has one that does. A friend actually can't HAVE FB as part of her job even under fake name (what!?).
BTW the public wall is not like a group or whatever, another person who hasn't set their settings right!

Re: Facebook to launch profile redesign
I don't have any crazy privacy settings and I get the whole social networking and public thing, I just think that it becomes a problem for people to keep on top of their privacy settings when fb changes.
I'm sure that even though you are friends with a co- worker on fb, you probably don't want them to see your status about your a$$hole boss.
I kinda see fb like a catch 22; it's great way to keep in touch with friends easily, but it exposes you in many ways to people that you may not want to.

Re: Facebook to launch profile redesign
i block everyone besides my friends and don't allow a public search on me, but i'm on fb because i like to stay in contact w/ family and friends and see what they're up to- plus some of my friends only use FB as their mode of communication!

Same here, I have very tight security settings on my FB profile and even only accept Friend requests from people I actually know or have dealt with long enough to trust they are legit. I cant post a lot of things because my job actually keeps tabs on social media things like this, and even my co-workers and I keep any work related postings to a minimum because as another LIF'er recently posted, some poor guy at a law firm got fired because his friend posted a gay comment on his wall.. So I am very neurotic about what info I post and what my friends post on my Wall.
I dont understand whyy Facebook needs to constantly screw around with our privacy settings. I am just happy with the site as it is now, why f@#2 it up more?

This is why I make it a practice to not be friends with anyone I work with that I'm not social with.
If I wouldn't hang with you in real life, you're not on my page.

I'm not asking this to be snarky, I'm asking a legitimate question...
If you're not searchable how did your friends find you on FB? And what's the point of being on FB if you're not "findable"?
I get that it's a way of communication with some friends be it those who may live far away or ones you don't see very often but what's the point in not being searchable?

I'm not searchable so I found all of my friends. Now the most secure setting is letting Friends of Friends search/ request you. At the time I got FB I was teaching and didn't want students to find me. Haven't taught in years so u don't really care now. I've always kept a strict no clepsydra rule bc I like to vent about work on FB and don't want to have to worry about being politically correct etc! I think that FB is a great way to stay informed. I like a bunch of news pages and get most of my news through FB. I don't think it should be legal to let your job tell you you can not have FB when it is becoming such a major part of everyday life. I think those employers that restrict it need to get with the times!!!
