Single baby who was once an identical twin (vanishing identical twin)
Hi ladies,
I was curious, have any of you experienced a vanishing identical twin?
And if so, how is your singleton now?
Do they have any health issues from being the surviving twin?
At what point did the vanish occur?

I don't know how much of a difference there is between a vanishing fraternal twin and a vanishing identical twin.
I had two twin pregnancies.
My first one, the twin stopped developing at 8 weeks.
DD had no health issues and is now almost 2.5
My 2nd one, stopped developing before we even saw the heartbeat, I think it stopped around 6 weeks.
DS is now 13 months and no health issues.
I had no bleeding with either one and by my 12 week sonos both were no longer there.

I don't know the differences either, but I was pregnant with fraternal twins. The vanishing twin stopped developing around 6 weeks or so - there never was a heartbeat. I don't remember when it completely vanished.
My son is now 19.5 months and has no health issues.

My first pg was fraternals (ended up a singleton and healthy). My next pregnancy was with identical twins. both survived).
Not to be a debbie downer but here is stuff to consider:
1. If the reason for loosing one is genetic, the surviving twin has the same DNA. This would concern me
2. If the reason for loosing one is an issue with the mother, the environment is the same for the surviving twin. Here the Dr has to identify the problem immediately before it affects the survivor.

I wouldn't worry, I've read its so much more common than we know, because its only recently that we actually do sonograms so early as to see them.

these are my concerns as well.
for the full story-
there is one baby that is measuring on schedule hb 142 7w4d
the othey baby has a HB of 92 measuring 6w 2d
the mom is 7w 1d
the peri told the mom that the twin looks like it may not make it but only time will tell.

We lost a twin at 9 weeks. From 7 weeks, one twin was measuring appropriately but the gestational sac was abnormally small. It became more and more apparent at each sono and then at 9 weeks there was no HB.
The surviving twin (Logan) is now almost 2 and perfectly healthy. There were no problems at all.

My first several sonos showed one gestational sac and three heartbeats. At 9 weeks, there were only two heartbeats. My identical twins continued to develop normally and were born at 38w5d at 6 pounds 8 oz and 7 pounds 5 oz.

I had a faternal twin pregnancy that resulted in a singleton who is now 2 yrs old. No health issues at all.
Our twin stopped developing right around 8 weeks butuke the story you said, the twin was always measuring 5 days behind.

DS1 was a twin, lost babyB around 10wks with no warning, bleeding, cramping, etc. One day there were 2 strong HBs, the next day there was 1.
In my case, it seems BabyB was reabsorbed by babyA - Logan. Logan had a cyst removed from his chest wall at 15 mos and the pathology showed nervous system cells, (most likely his twin's early developing brain and spinal cord).

Just to share my story on the positive side. I became pregnant with twins through IVF. Baby B was visible at my first sono with RE. Baby A was abrely there Dr said she might see the beginnings of another sack, but wasn't sure. Next time we went Baby B had a HB, Baby A did not but there was a sac. Next time Baby B totally fine, Baby A had a low HB of 99.
After pregnancy I read my medical records and saw one of the Dr's had written high possibility of vanishing twin. Well all through my pregnancy Baby A was smaller always measured about 6 days behind his brother. At birth they were 5.14 and 6.3. Baby A had a bit more trouble with breathing and came out of NICU 2 days after his brother. he needed tubes at 10 months ol but that is it. No health issues or anything. Both boys are healthy and normal. IVF embies can take their sweet time implanting.

I have not experienced this, but my cousin did. 1 twin vanished; the baby she had is typically developing/healthy!!

I was pregnant w/ twins twice.
The first time, Baby A did not make it past 9 weeks. Baby B, we found out from the CVS test, had Trisomy 18.
The 2nd time, Baby A was fine, but baby B was measuring behind. In fact, the Dr. didn't see the twin at first. It was only when I went to the specialist where they discovered the twin. My RE thought it was genetic and that Baby B wouldn't make it. He was right Baby B did not make it to 10 weeks. Baby A- aka my son Jason is a healthy big boy- 8 months tomorrow.
Hope your friends case is a late implanter.

My mother has told me that she's pretty sure she had vanishing twin with me. She had what appeared to be a miscarriage at 3 months, but was still pregnant. Back then you didn't have a sono until about 20 weeks, so they didn't know for certain she was PG with twins. And I'm left-handed, which apparently is likely to be the case with a surviving vanishing fraternal twin. No health problems here!
