Rifton chairs at Daycare; pet peeve or real concern?
DS's daycare uses Rifton chairs at snack time, with the belts fastened. He is 14 months old and is able to get in and out of a child size chair independently so I don't really feel like he needs to be strapped in for safety. I usually pick him up just after snack so he is belted in when I get there. When he sees me come in he scoots his chair back from the table and tries to get up but he can't (because of the belt) and then he starts to cry. On the other hand if he was eating in a high chair or a booster seat like he does at home he would be strapped in and I wouldn't think twice about. But these are small child sized chairs, so there isn't really a risk of falling. The idea of DS being restrained rubs me the wrong way, but he does LOVE his daycare teachers, and I can tell they love him, and I don't want to mess that up by nit picking. Should I say something or just let it go? Is this a real concern, or am I just being a control freak?

I do think you are nit picking. Im sure some child has been hurt by falling off them. So, now everyone must wear it. I wouldnt say anything. Because if it was your kid who fell and go hurt, this would be a post on her irresponsible they are.

Peak in and wait until he is done eating before you pick him up.. then he wont try and get out of the seat to see you.
Def not an issue I would be concerned about..

Daycares have to follow strict safety rules and thank God that they do.
They are doing the right thing.

Really? Them keeping your DC safe is a concern?
I think I would be happy to see a room of 14 months old safely strapped in their chairs for snack time.

I think you are being a bit of a control freak. I know at my DS's daycare, they have 8-10 kids in a room at that age and things happen quicker than the teachers can react sometimes. I would appreciate that they are being on the safer side.

He is usually finished when I get there, and the staff are cleaning up. He does seem fine until he sees me so I guess he is fine. Thank you all for your replies, I am glad to hear that no one is really worried about it, because I really don't want to rock the boat unnecessarily. On principle, I still don't think children should be restrained (a belted Rifton chair is a restraint) without parental consent, but I am going to let this one go. Just out of curiosity at what age do you think it becomes inappropriate?

oh come on now....no need for this type of response. She was just asking a question. Take it easy. Responses like this are the reason people hold back from asking vald questions.
Kim I'm sure the reason he is belted in is bc like another poster said daycares have very strict guidelines they have to follow I wouldn't worry.

Oh I am definitely glad they are keeping the kids safe. But for what I pay in daycare costs, I also want to make sure DS is having the best experience possible, while staying safe, when he is in their care.

They're doing the right thing.
They have a lot of safety guidelines to follow.
This shouldn't be an issue.

For what it's worth, I work in education, and I do understand following laws, guidelines etc. Ours would not allow for this type of seating without notifying the parent. But of course we about talking about 2 different age groups, which is why I wanted to get other opinions. Again, I am glad that I don't need to be concerned.

I also do not see the big deal. Would you be concerned if they strapped him in a stroller to go for a walk? I would think this is pretty comparable. I'm sure your son would be fine just in the chair, but I would guess that many if the kids would be tempted to get up and play during snack time if they weren't constrained. So if they strap in one child, they need to strap them all.

I can't really explain why, but if I saw my 14 month old in a chair like that, it would bother me. Like they are being restrained so the teachers can do what they need to do without interruption.

I could see both sides of it. 14 months old is still young, so he could fall out of the chair. On the other hand I could see why it rubbed you the wrong way to see him strapped in after snack is finished. I would not want him strapped in their after he ate. I would definitely observe a little before you pick him up or at another time to see how long they keep the kids strapped in the chair. Like the above poster said I wouldn't want the kids strapped in so the teachers could do their jobs.
