Choosing a buddy....anxiety

Apparently my son's new teacher asks them to choose a buddy for various activities and my son has been rejected by at least one other child. He feels a great deal of anxiety about having to find a buddy in class. What can I do to hep him? I feel terrible because he suddenly feels like he has no friends which is not true, but he says only two kids will be his buddy.

Starting new activities with new kids is always difficult for him because he is so shy.

In my DD's class they have a buddy system. Each week they have a new buddy that is assigned to them. They started it a few weeks ago so she is on her 3rd buddy so far. They have an assigned activity each day with their buddy (like Monday is eat snack together, Tuesday they do a center together, Wednesday they have to draw eachother a picture, etc) and they also walk with their buddy and if an activity calls for buddies that is who they use for the week.

I do think that kids chosing the buddy can get uncomfortable for some of the kids. If it continues to be an issue I would honestly address it with the teacher. I wouldn't want my child to feel left out.
