just a vent....but what are your thoughts?
basic facts:
- many companies face understaffing due to layoffs/cut backs/etc
- more work is then spread out amongst small # of people, who are getting burn out, understandably
- of course, remaining people are busting their behinds & not complaining, trying to keep their heads above water in order to show they are an asset to company
big complaint:
-due to understaffing, many requests for time off are denied -- because only X amount of people are allowed off per day. Because so many employees have been let go, it's hard for people to take the day off. This is earned time off, vacation days, etc.....it's part of your benefit package.
....It kind of sucks people aren't even allowed to take time off all because management decided to work at the bare minimum # of employees.
and everyone is sick of hearing, "Well, you are lucky to even be employed," because, well, what about your basic entitlements? such as your vacation time?
Anyone else facing this?

also, a lot of vacation time MUST be taken before a certain date the following year (you can carry it over to the following year, but it must be taken before X date.)
Which is ridiculous, if you ask me.

Re: just a vent....but what are your thoughts?
Absolutely feeling it here! I work as a receptionist in a law firm. There are 3 desks to covers and 3 different shifts. We used to have 10 receptionists, we now have 5. So only one person in our dept. is ever allowed to call in sick, well, at least if the rest of the dept. is interested in taking lunch. If one person is out, that means at least TWO other people have to either come in early or stay late- every.single.time. We have a vacation book now, since my boss got tired of denying vacation requests, so we have to check the book and see if anyone else in our dept. is off for that time and if they are don't even bother putting in for it, you are SOL. Also, I am now the receptionist/admin. assistant/accounts payable/conference room services/special events coordinator/photographer with no pay increase or bonus.
ETA: At least we can carry over vacation time up to a certain amount, which 3 of the receptionists have reached and are forced to take time off or else they don't accrue any more vacation.
ETAA: I have been at work with a sinus infection for the past week and a half. I took a half day one day to get antibiotics, but since I haven't been able to take any time off to recuperate, I'm still sick and finished with my antibiotics and my asssshole GP won't call in a prescription for me since he wants my damn $25 co-pay.

That's really sh!tty. I am sorry. Sometimes I want to vent on here, but I feel so many are out of a job currently,so I feel like I shouldn't complain....but in the same sense, I feel the remaining employees who are employed are treated so poorly, and I think we are all getting sick of it! And I do identify with a lot of what you're saying.I hope you feel bette soon.

Thank you!!! I know exactly what you mean. And trust me, I'm grateful for my job and as much as I'd like to say take this job and shove it, I know it's scarier out there than it is in here. But the employers are really abusing the fact that employees are kind of stuck where they are right now. It's killing us! Sorry I went on a crazy rant there, it's been a really rough week this week! lol!
