Let's talk Communions

Anyones child make theirs yet?

Where did you have the party? Buy the dress/suit? Ball park, what was the budget?

I was speaking to a few people, and they have already booked restaurants...7 months early . I better get moving.

DS is making his communion the 1st week in May. I never even considered a restaurant. I am planning a party at home after church where i will be cooking and most likely heroes/salads.

People do book places really early. I had my son's party at home. I will do the same with my DD's next May. My son's suit was from my nephew who received his First Communion the year before but you can buy a suit or dress anywhere. Ebay, jcpenney, online, boutiques, wedding places like David's Bridal. You can spend $30 or you can spend $300+. My DD was just a flowergirl in a wedding and she wore an ivory pick up dress, complete with headpiece. I doubt it will fit her the same in May and having it cut down to be shorter seems like it might be more expensive that purchasing a new outfit for her. If you do want a big party at a place, definitely start looking & booking.

My son made his communion last April.

We received the date in January and I booked the party in February. We had 75 people to invite and April's weather isn't very predictable so an at home party was definitely not an option.

I bought his suit at Little Dickens in Centereach and his shoes from Zappos.

Unfortunately my older son is small for his age (wore a size 6 suit) and my younger son is big for his age (wears a size 6 now and won't make his communion till 2013) so they won't be able to wear the same suit.

Anyway, I think a communion can be as elaborate or as simple as you'd like it to be. We went to about 5 communions this spring, some at home, some at restaurants and some at catering halls and all were lovely.

We found out our date in December but you can talk to the teachers to see if they have any info ahead of time

We had the party at Mac's Steakhouse. I can email you my spreadsheet of the places we looked at. I was trying to keep it under $2500 for a group of about 30.

We went to My Little Rascals. They were completely amazing, even steered me towards a lower price gown because the one my daughter liked left a tiny red mark when she tried it on. The salesperson (owner?) said "if it's red now, it will be a nightmare if she wears it all day". They made Maddie feel like a princess, suggested she test it out by twirling They also have a HUGE selection for little girls. Joseph's suit was from Sears, quick easy & needed some alterations.

The restaurant that tends to book first is the Mill Pond.

I'm not sure what church you're out but it's likely by November they'll have the date. You can even look at the Education Calendar online because it lists the different days (which were mainly in May for us).

We got our date after Thanksgiving and the communion was in May and I started calling places that same week and 7 of out 10 places were booked already. We ended up doing Belle Verde (next to Heartland Golf in Deer Park) and LOVED it. The price was right, it was all to ourselves, the staff was amazing. Owned by Papa Joe's in Deer Park

We ended up used my oldest daughter's dress this time but we bought it from Litte Rascals in Islip, they had a great selection and the salespeople were great. We started looking for dresses about January.

My son makes his first Communion the first weekend in May. The date was printed on the school calendar when we got it back in July. I know people who have booked huge wedding-type reception halls already.

I am not planning a big reception hall or restaurant function. We will have food catered at home for my and DH's immediate families. We are desperately trying to keep the costs down, since #3 is due in March and we will have a Baptism to do as well (again, same thing, at home).

We will be ordering from our favorite Italian restaurant. He has a suit or two already, but I will most likely get him a nice new one for that day. I am sort of glad it's my boy making his First Communion now and not my girl. Call me unfair, but its a lot easier not having to worry about a dress, veil, flowers, etc.!
