DS is in kindergarten and in an allergy class. Last week a note went home asking for each parent to kindly send in $15 for class party money and it would be for the entire year. I send in the money.

Today I get this email from one of the class mom's and I am a little confused. Tell me what you think? I was under the impression that the money would be used for paper good and snacks for ALL the kids.

I am one of the class moms who will be assisting Mrs. S with
class parties and activities this school year. We have 11 allergy
children in our PM Kindergarden class. We will be having a few parties
this year and would like your input as to what type of snack/goodies is
appropriate for your child to have at the class parties. We were also
suggesting that the children with allergies could bring in their own
snack on the day of the party. I would e-mail you to remind you to
bring in a snack the day before the party as well.

very confusing email...

i am a class mom for DD, and we collected $20/family that goes towards class parties (crafts and games) teacher gifts, and other items i am forgetting now...

at back to school night we had separate sign up sheets for parents to volunteer to bring in snacks and supplies (napkins, plates, drinks) for each of the parties. we also had sign up sheets for art and library as requested by the teacher.

re-reading the email it sounds like she would email a reminder to BYO if you had a kid with allergies the day before the party. if allergies are not a concern then your DC would be eating whatever everyone else is, and they are looking for guidelines as to what is appropriate? i have no clue, i would email back requesting clarification...

it sounds like the children with allergies will bring their own to me. Wonder, will they get a discounted rate?

ELEVEN KIDS?!

I know if I was the class mom, I would be highly concerned about bringing in the wrong food. Sounds like she doesn't want to have to worry about it but if someone can suggest something that everyone can have, I'm sure she'd be thrilled.

With 11 kids, I'd say someone suggests an Edible Arrangement or make one homemade & get reimbursed for the fruit. It's unfair to the parents of the kids with allergies that it's a class contribution which they won't take part in. I could understand if $15 went for the teachers gifts but if food is included, I'd have one of the moms step up & help her (walking carefully on the political egg shells).

I don't know, but I just have to say.... $15-20 for class party money??? That's A LOT!! In my school, we ask for $5 per child, and lots of time we don't even get it!

Wow, I'm just blown away by those numbers.

To me it sounds like they are going to try to buy things that the kids with allergies can eat (asking for suggestions for what your kid can eat), but with 11 kids that's going to be pretty tough. So they are also suggesting if you are one of those families you think about sending in a treat for your child that you know is safe rather than risk that they know how to properly read a food label for your child's situation.

Being a parent to a kid with multiple food allergies I always send in something for him and don't ask for any money back out of the class fund. But there are only a handful in his class, if the class moms weren't spending as much on food since half was being sent in from home I'd expect to get some money back.

The $15 is for the year not just this party and I am fine with it.

Cathy I do agree with what you are saying especially if a child has multiply allergies but the class is specifically for allergy students.

I was going to write this:

Hi Everyone!!

I am Adrianna, Luka's mom and a first timer at MELC :)
I was under the impression that since it is an allergy class that the snacks purchased for the parties would be appropriate for all the students, with the exception of students with multiple food allergies were it may be difficult.
Luka's allergies really do not affect snacks, but here is a list of suggestions I came up:
Animal crackers
pretzels
fishes...all flavors
grapes, apples, cantaloupe
oreo's
dunkin donuts munchkins

I look forward to meeting everyone and hopefully have some play dates in the future.
For the class mom's, if you need assistance with picking things up, let me know so I can help. I wasn't able to put my name down for class mom since I have a child in pre-k at another school and a 6 month old.

Sincerely,
Adrianna

I think thats a great idea. And if anyone has any different or rare type of allergy, then I would understand asking the parent to send in a safe snack.

$15? Wow... thats a lot! Our principal will only let us ask for $5 per child per year. That covers crafts. We ask for donations of food and paper goods (plates, etc).

Don't find the email odd, just the amount of money they are asking for.
