A midwife will provide all of your medical care and can deliver your baby, a doula is a support for you but is not able do anything beyond that.

I've heard wonderful things about Melanie Summerville (sp?) who delivers at Winthrop. You can always combine a doula that you hire with an Ob or a midwife.

I use Melanie and I love her! She works directly under a doctor, so if something goes wrong he's on call. He also monitors your delivery from home from his computer if you're being constantly monitored (example is if you're given pitocin). Typically your chances of a having a c-section are lower if you're using a midwife, especially if you hace a drug-free birth.

Congrats & welcome!

Another Melanie patient here! We adored her, and she was great even though my birth did NOT go as planned.

I have a friend that goes to the SB Midwives and loves them. Another had two births with the Gaia midwives and raves.

A midwife may be able to recommend a doula to you. You can also use a doula if you prefer an OB.

Melanie Sumersille is my midwife and she has been great so far! I would definitely recommend her. She's with Garden City OBGYN. (Dr. Plancher in her office is also awesome! If for whatever reason you couldn't see Melanie, Dr. Plancher would step in and he's great.)

We plan to go med free so having a doula was really important to us. The key is to stay home as long as possible if you want to go med free and we felt like a doula would help us stay home for most of my labor. If you'd like my doula's contact info, FM me.

Good luck!

I'm SO jealous of you midwife girls!!! My DH would not hear of it, he wants our care by an Ob only...we do have a doula and intend to labor at home as long as possible.

I am hopeful that for our next child, we will both be on the same page and use a midwife.

Thanks ladies, I live in Queens so using someone who delivers out of Winthrop or SB is prob not realisic for me.

I really adore my OB and am fine with delivering at LIJ (where my OB delivers). The most important thing for me is to have a natural, vaginal birth. I really do NOT want to have a c-section unless it is absolutely necessary. I guess i was just wondering if having a midwife/doula would be beneficial in that respect.

If you are having an OBGYN then you can't have a midwife too. It's one or the other. But, you totally can have a doula. My doula was recommended to me through my childbirth educator, Celeste Rachell. Her web site is www.longislandbirthpartners.com.

Good luck to you!
