Preemies and STTN

When did your preemie start STTN?
age?
Adjusted age?

Did you do it on your own or wait for the Ped's rec?

The boys are coming home soon and I am going to keep them on the NICU schedule, but DH and I have been discussing STTN (or at the very least a 4-5 stretch). Just wondering what has worked for the BTDT moms of Preemies. TIA Chat Icon

Re: Preemies and STTN

My twins were born at 33 wk 6 days

They came home after 10 days and I followed the every 3 hour feeding schedule.

When they were about 6 weeks old they would sleep 4-5 hours at night

at 10 weeks they sleep about 6 hour stretches

12 weeks 7 hours

4 mo 10 hours

4.5mo to now 12 hours

I still fed them every 3 hours during they day. I always woke them during the day.

Hope that helps! I remember feeling like they would never sleep through the night (I think I posted the same question) Now it is a distant memory!

Congrats! and good luck!

Our boys were born at 31w6d and are now 6 weeks. Our pediatrician just gave us permission today to let them go for 4-5 hours overnight, but still wake them every 3 hours during the day for feeding.

Re: Preemies and STTN

My boys were born at 36 weeks. H. was in the NICU for 5 days, but G. came home w/ me. We woke them up to eat the first few months. G. was only 4 lbs when he came home and I really wanted them to gain weight. After 2 months, we were zombies and stopped waking them up!

They started STTN (CIO) around 6 - 7 mo. We would have done it sooner, but H. was having a serious surgery so we always got up and held/ rocked/ fed him when he woke up in the middle of the night.

Re: Preemies and STTN

Born at 30 week. Came home at 6 weeks later.

Sleeping through the night at 14 weeks (not adjusted age).

The Dr wanted me to keep waking them to feed. They had very bad acid reflux so any night feeding would aggregate them and keep them up for hours with the pain after feeding. So, I decided i skip the feeding.

My twins were born at 32 weeks to the day and spent 30 days in the NICU. At first we followed the NICU schedule of every 3 hours. At about 12 weeks they started sleep for about a 4-5 hours stretch. At about 16 weeks, 8 weeks adjusted, is when they started to STTN. I remember telling DH that i hope they start STTN before i go back to work. And the week i was scheduled to go back they started.

When we brought them to the ped for their first visit, she wanted us to feed them every 1-2 hours because they were less than 5lbs each. I did not follow her instructions on that. I fed them every 3 hours unless they were hungry before than. I was BF'ing and pumping and i would have been feeding forever!!! We pretty much did it on our own.

My twins were born 32w1d and spent a month in NICU. They are 2 months todayChat Icon and are sleeping 4 hrs at night. I still wake every 3 hrs to feed during the day. About 2 weeks home, ped said to see how long they could go at night, but they still woke every 3 hrs, its just been the last week or so that they give me 4. I suspect Marco would give me 5 but I can't take the chanceChat Icon So I wake him to feed at night.

Sometimes at night they don't go right back down either. and then the one crying will trigger the other.... IT.IS.EXHAUSTING.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My girls were born at 32 weeks, they are 5 1/2 months almost 4 months adjusted age. Abbie will sleep through the night waking for her binky a few times and Sophia still wakes up once a night for a bottle that she clearly does not need but I think is habit at this point. They still eat every 3/4 hours during the day, usually 3 hours they can't seem to stretch to the 4 hour mark yet without getting really cranky even though they are eating so much.
I asked the Ped when we went for visits when it would be ok to let them go through the night.

Re: Preemies and STTN

I had a singleton at 31w6d. Spent a month in the NICU. We kept him on the NICU schedule when we came home (wake every 3 hours to feed to make sure he gained enough weight etc).

At about 4 months old (2 months adjusted), they said we could let him go longer at night (in other words, don't wake to feed, feed on demand for overnight only).

At 6 months old (4 months adjusted), I did CIO. He had STTN on his own a handful of times at 5 months old. We knew he could do it, he was just really attached to the boob. Wouldn't take a bottle, just wanted the boob. So we did CIO and it was successful.

He has been STTN since then.

Lots of luck!!!! Chat Icon
