pdd-nos??

Ok- I finally had the ADOS done on my 19 month old twins. They were both diagnosed with PDD-NOS... if the scores were 7-11, its pdd-nos, and 12 or above is "classic autism". My kids scored a 9 and an 11. The evaluator did say that even if their scores were a little higher, she wouldnt feel comfortable with a DX of autism. I understand that pdd-nos is still on the spectrum. I was actually SO surprised at how well they seemed to do. They were so playful with the evaluator and were engaged the whole time. Signed for "more" quite often and handed her stuff they wanted to play with. She did say it was great that they sat with her (even on her lap) to play but she would have liked to have seen them "bringing her into their play". I guess my main question is what does the future hold for a child with pdd-nos... She did tell me becasue of all the positives and how social they are, that the label could be dropped before they are school age. But she also said she doesnt have a crystal ball to 100% say they wont "regress" and meet autism criteria at a later date... Is pdd-nos basically a holding pattern for a child until they are actually diagnosed with classic autism? I am trying not to drive myself crazy by googling all night, but I did a little and am getting so much different answers! Thanks to anyone who read thru this and can shed some light!!

pdd-nos, is on the spectrum and you will see the differences in the children diagnosed with it.
It is a developmental delay and no one knows what the future will hold. Are you children verbal? EI is very important and you have started early which is so important. Good luck to you and your children.

Services are the key! And it sounds like you're on your way to getting them?
DD is PDD-NOS and was diagnosed at 3.5 yrs. It's a kind of a "catch-all" thing, meaning the child displays many characteristics of autism but not all.
Good luck!!! Chat Icon

Re: pdd-nos??

As you know every child is different and progresses differently. My son was dx with PDD NOS at 23 months. Since then (he just turned 3) he went from 2 words to I can't even count, knows every animal, every sound they make, letter, shape, color-etc., you name it and he knows it, labeling is his thing. He has never regressed in any learning, always masters a program within 1-2 days and just keeps moving on. His struggle is eye contacting and socializing. It's not that he's not social because he loves affection and attention but doesn't know how to naturally walk in a room and just play. I'm seeing it more now that he's older. It's the basic things that we just pick up on and now how to do that he has to be taught everything. So as you can see my kid has this and another might have a tougher time with communication or behavior. My advice, take all the services you can, educate yourself and just keep talking, talking, talking to your guys. Focus on now vs. later. I'm sure they'll thrive and do wonderfulChat Icon

Re: pdd-nos??

DS was diagnosed with PPD-NOS at 18 months. He is more turning 22 months and I see a difference in his behavior and he is becoming vocal. He has no words but as of last week started to babble. Its music to my ears. Take any and all services. DS gets 4 hours of ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) a day and 30 mins. of speech a day (both 5 days a week).

Re: pdd-nos??

DS was diagnosed with PDD-NOS at 22 months. He just turned 3 in September, and he is a totally different child. I never would have believed it if I didn't see it for myself. He knows so many things now, is talking so much more than I ever thought he would, and scares my mother with how well he can read. Yes I said read, which I know is not normal at 3, but it has been very useful in teaching him lots of things. ABA has done wonders for my child and I am so thankful he has come this far in a year, and I can't wait to see what the next year brings. Good luck!!
