back from lvl II - good and worrisome news, may need amnio
so we just got back from our lvl 2 sono and found out baby is a boy but after plugging in measurements, the ratio for downs went up to 1:50. we saw the genetic counselor and are leaning towards getting an amnio but i'm really concerned about possible miscarriage. everything else was supposedly normal just that baby's head was measuring a bit big and round. so torn on whether to do the procedure

Aww congrats on your ! Deciding on whether to do the amnio is a very personal decision. Those ratios are just guesses and anyone I know who had a high risk ration ended up with a perfectly fine baby. Best of luck!

Congrats on having a . You do whatever you feel comfortable with. I know 3 people that got amnios and they all had healthy babies. I am sure that everything will be fine so just do whatever you and your DH decide to you, don't feel pressured either way.

Congrats on the . I had an amnio done and honestly The emotional lead up to it was way worse then the actual proceedure.
The amnios are sono guided so there is no chance of them going in at a wrong spot.
The risk of miscarraige was much higher before they used the sonos.
I can answer question syou might have. I had such peace after I received the results and do not 2nd guess my decision.

Down Syndrome babies dont have big and round heads. They have small for gestational age heads and the back of their heads usually appear a bit smaller than normal.
Was this the only abnormal finding on the sonogram?
(My daughter has Down Syndrome)

Re: back from lvl II - good and worrisome news, may need amnio
Congrats on your I had an amnio for my first after a test came back slightly elevated. The amnio itself was very quick. It was performed at the hospital and my Dr did the needle part and another dr guided him all the way with a sono. I didn't look, but DH said they were nowhere near the baby. I know there is a risk of miscarriage with the amnio, but it is really a very small risk. Like the pp said, these are just screenings and everything usually turns out fine. Good luck in whatever you decide and FM me with any questions.

I had a sono with DS#2 and I agree the anticipation leading to the test was much worse than the test itself. The doc who did the procedure was fantastic, as was the sono tech who helped with the test. I didn't have any cramping but I took a couple days off from work (it was a holiday weekend) just to be safe. Congrats on the -- you will get through this!

Re: back from lvl II - good and worrisome news, may need amnio
I had an amnio too after my 12 week and 16 week blood work both came back high for downs. It was the best decision we made. We found out we were having a healthy and though at 20 weeks found out the baby has an omphalocele, small hernia we knew due to the amnio that the baby was genetically healthy. We had some peace of mind that all was well. I had a ton of support from the women on here that helped me realize that I had made the best decision. The doctor that did mine was great and I relaxed after it, even had a glass of red wine that was suggested to me by the doctor. Good Luck!

Re: back from lvl II - good and worrisome news, may need amnio
Congrats on your My sister-in-law had a healthy baby girl in June, but she was older-she was 38 when she had her last little girl. When she went for her NT scan they said the baby's bowels were larger and a different color than they should be and it could be one of three things or it could be nothing. They told her to go for an amnio and she did just for peace of mind, baby was fine though. She said she also did the amnio in case there was something wrong she wanted to be prepared. Its really up to you. Its a tough decision. I wish you lots of luck in whatever you decide and think positive!

Re: back from lvl II - good and worrisome news, may need amnio
Congratulations on your boy!
Yes, there are risks involved with the amnio. However, so many people have amnios so often, I think the doctors are so skilled at them that they have to share the risks out of obligation, but in most cases there is not a problem!
Also something to consider....sono measurements can be very off sometimes! Many people have gotten false scares from sono measurements and their babies were just fine.
If the baby were to have Down's Syndrome, would you go through with the pregnancy reguardless of whether or not the baby had Down's Syndrome? Would you continue the pregnancy and would want to know just so that you could start to prepare yourself for having a special needs child?
There is certainly a lot to think about. I hope it all works out for the best for you and your family.
I would personally go through with the amnio, just so that I would know, either way.

Re: back from lvl II - good and worrisome news, may need amnio
update: I'm back from the amnio. We decided to just do it. It wasn't terribly painful but it was uncomfortable when the fluid was being extracted. Now to just wait until mon for the fish results.... Thank you so much to all you wonderful ladies for sharing your advice :)
