Pugs: Collapsed trachea

DH took our boy to the vet today.

He sounded like he had a cough for the past 2 days.

Apparently this is pretty common in pugs.

Vet did not recommend the surgery.

Anyone else's pug have this?

He is 7.

I have a 6yr toy poodle with a collapsed trachea. He is on medication but it is not that bad (not yet at least). A lot of small dogs have collapsing trachea and live long normal lives.

My 2 small dogs had the issue when they were puppies. It got better with age. They still have issues once in a while but rarely.

Our vet just told us that is was common. No surgery!

What do you recommend watching for with this? (I know that sounds like a dumb question).

I am going to schedule the vet visit for myself for next week and also ask them.

Do you use a collar or a harness when he goes for a walk? We also have a pug

I am sorry to hear about your Pug. We have a Pug, and although he does not have an issue with his trachea, our Mini Pin did. Use a puppia harness to prevent any further damage. I'm not sure if your pug makes funny noises when he eats (ours does), but with our Mini Pin, we looked for any signs of him having trouble eating or drinking. Other than that there is not much you can do. Most dogs live normally with a collapsed trachea.

Yup my pug has had it in the past. He sounds like a goose gasping for air. One vet once told me it was reverse sneezing, and 2 others called in a collapsed trachea so I don't know. I use a harness instead of a collar and I've read that you can help it by raising their food and water bowls (i dont).

Also, when they are in the middle of an episode, the vet said to embrace him gently and try to calm him down, pet him, speak to him in soothing tones. That really works when mine has had an episode. Luckily (knock wood) its been a while since his last one.
