The dreaded head lice...
A little girl in my son's class was sent home Tuesday afternoon with a case of head lice.
She was back in school already today.
Someone talk me down off the ledge because I'm ready to blow a fit....
Can it really be totally gone that fast? The daughter or a friend of a friend of mine had it last year and she wasn't allowed back in school for a week.

Ugh. Sorry.
Our district doesn't require that you keep the kid home if you show the nurse you are treating it, so bringing in the box from RID or whatever.
I know someone who used the Fairy LiceMothers earlier this year when RID didn't work for her and they said that after the do the initial treatment and comb out to get rid of all the eggs, nymphs & lice, you should be lice free, but you need keep using their products properly for 2 weeks to be totally sure.

I'm not saying she DOESN'T have lice but that yes, it could be done that fast.
I beleive the box said 3 days of treatment with follow-ups after you've treated your house.

Haven't had the lice experience at home but I've heard from other moms. The "ladybugs" where at DS's school twice and it seems a lot of kids were sent home and the very next day, after the treatment, they were at the nurse, waiting to be checked to go to the class room. Just based in that info, I guess you can get rid of lice in one day.

Yes, it can be done that fast. Lice Busters only uses Pantene conditioner to pick out the lice and nits and then the kids get sent right back to class. But the nurse must check their heads the next day, I believe, before going back to class. My concern would be an infestation in their homes, though. I mean, it would be so easy for it to re-infest, right?

My district has a "nit free" policy (meaning there can be no nits, or eggs, present in the hair) but that is not the case in every district. If the parent was really on top of it, they could remove the nits and everything in one day, but I would find out if the district has a nit free policy or not so you know how cautious to be. When we had a repeat case in my classroom, we (the teachers) started using tea-tree oil shampoo just to be safe.

Staying home for a week does not mean that the lice goes away. Every single louse and nit must be removed from the head and it is a labor intensive process. If you know what you are doing and have a cooperative child, you can be lice free in a few hours. If not, you will have lice for months on end. It's not reasonable to expect parents to keep their kids home. I did not have the luxury of keeping my child home because I had to work so I had no choice but to stay up all night picking invisible glued nits from her hair. In fact since the kid in your child's class probably got it from another child in the class, that other child may not know they have it and is still there, so he/she is actually a greater danger than the child sent home (because you can tell your child to just avoid him/her). My advice is that you should remind your child not to put their head anywhere near another child's hair, head, hat, etc. and if if they have long hair, tie it up and put on a lot of hair spray or gel. I went to a mini seminar on lice at the All Kids Fair several months back. It was pretty informative...although made me itchy after  Lice need a head to live on, so they don't really survive on furnishings in your home. They said it's really a myth that you need to throw all of your stuff in the dryer. They don't live on stuffed animals. They said the easiest way to spread aside from sharing hats/brushes, etc. is from hugging. They also said that those sprays to prevent it are not 100%. If there is no head for the lice to go to, they will go to yours, regardless if there is rosemary spray on it.
IF my kids ever get lice, I'll be calling a professional to get rid of it. They sit there and pick ALL the nits out she said, and will do re-checks also.

Completely off topic.. but how did you know which girl had the lice and that she was back? Whenever we get messages like that at school I'm always so curious about WHO the kid is.. but our school will not release that information so I wind up playing guessing games and trying to get my kids to remember who was out!

My son was at the nurse getting checked at the same time as the little girl overheard everything. She went home immediately. My son was out the next day but the day after that when he was back, he said she was back with shorter hair.
I don't know what prompted them to get checked (if it was routine or if the teacher saw something). I worked as a Kindergarten aide for awhile and the teacher and I would always look out for stuff like that. On some kids it's kind of obvious.
