Question of the Day 10/13/11

Have you ever read a book which changed your life/mind/emotions? Which touched you deeply?

If so, what book?

I would have to say Sarah's Key, The Book Thief and The Help.

Re: Question of the Day 10/13/11

There have been a lot of books which have touched me, or opened my eyes.

Two which stand out in my mind most are:

Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt (my great grandmother was the only member of a large family to make it to America from Ireland, and she never spoke to her family again. That's why the story interested me so.)

Night by Elie Wiesel.

Many. Almost everything I read. At least, everything I read and enjoy affects me in some way.

The most notable are probably something borrowed and something blue. not the most profound books, but very personal to me.

others--catcher in the rye, pride and prejudice, night road, a number of books on trafficking, memoirs of a geisha, my sister's keeper, 2 that i can't remember the name of, but i remember the stories, night road, what alice forgot....so many more.

Something Borrowed deeply affected me. There are a few parts in Baby Proof that get to me, too.

Gone with the Wind made me do a lot of thinking and was, in some ways, rather healing.

The Age of Innocence always makes me cry, but not sure if it had that sort of influence.

Jonathan Tropper - How to Talk to a Widower.

Without spoiling anything, it made me appreciate every day for what it has to offer.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven was the first book that came to mind.

The River Midnight.

Someone had just done a family tree for us, so after 26 years of uncertainty, I finally knew where we were from. My great-great grandparents were around the same age as the characters and lived in the same area. I loved the book, and was inspired to do some digging.

I discovered that, after my great-great grandfather's death, his wife sent their six sons to the United States. She sent them one at a time over a ten-year period. She did it for their safety (it was dangerous to be Jewish in Eastern Europe in 1900). She never saw them again, and lived for another 25 years without her sons.

When I put the pieces of the story together, it broke my heart. It seemed like this woman, who lost her husband young and protected her children by sending them half a world away, was forgotten. My daughter gets part of her name from my great-great grandma... because I read a book.

Both of those were great.

I would also add:

The Secret- I found it to be inspirational and very interesting. I re-read it often.

The Art of Racing in the Rain- What a beautiful story told through a dogs eyes.

Very cliche, but Eat Pray Love.

I think of it often and while I cannot travel around the world right now, I REALLY try to live in the moment. I savor my favorite foods, I try to love as passionately as I can and pray with the same passion. . . I don't remember all the time but when I do, it does improve the quality of my life.
