3rd Book in Hunger Game series ***THREAD CONTAINS SPOILERS***

Please tell me it's worth it to finish it. I loved and flew thru the first 2 books. Now I'm on the third book about a 1/3 of the way thru and I'm dying. I'm so freaking bored! Give me hope to finish it!

You have to finish it, but you are right, it is not nearly as good as the first two.

I am in the EXACT same boat right now. I read the first two in two days... and now I'm slowly reading Mockingjay. I do like it, but I'm nowhere near as engrossed by it as I was by the other two. (I just keep telling myself that I'm making it last. Chat Icon )

Re: 3rd Book in Hunger Game series

The 3rd book took a very different direction. I think you do need to finish it to really understand the trilogy as a whole, but the first time I read it I felt very unsatisfied by it. It took me a while to digest it because I loved the way the 1st and 2nd one were written but the 3rd one is definitely the darkest book of the lot.

I forced myself to go back and re-read the trilogy now knowing more details of the complete story and although I still felt that the 3rd book felt a bit rushed, I give Suzanne Collins alot of credit for writing it the way that she did.

Without spoiling it for you, I'll stop here but when you're finished we can chat Chat Icon

Re: 3rd Book in Hunger Game series **SPOILERS**

OK girls!!! I finished it last night!! You were all so right! I'm glad I finished it!!! It didn't compare to the first 2 however, it had it's place in the series and looking back over it all now, I see that it was necessary to tie it all up. I have to say that I def enjoyed the later half of the book more than the first half.

***SPOILERS BELOW***

I loved it once they got into the capitol. You could feel the tension and never knowing which way Peeta was going to turn or what was going on with Gale. Cried when Prim died. Nearly dropped my kindle when she killed Coin. Felt Katniss' lack of will to live in the aftermath. Fell in love with Peeta all over again when he brought her the Primroses to plant. I <3 Katniss and Peeta so I think that's why the beginning was so difficult for me. I couldn't have been happier with the ending!

Re: 3rd Book in Hunger Game series ***THREAD CONTAINS SPOILERS***

I'm so glad you read it. I'm with you on the whole capitol sequence. I was so angry when Gale just really abandoned her. It was terrible...after everything. I mean I get that she would blame him for Prim's death- which seriously tore my heart out...I had to re-read it 3 times to even let it sink in- but ultimately I was happy with how she wrapped it all up.

I love her explanation of how Katniss came to the realization of how Peeta was always the one that she was meant to be with.

“That what I need to survive is not Gale’s fire, kindled with rage and hatred. I have plenty of fire myself. What I need is the dandelion in the spring. The bright yellow that means rebirth instead of destruction. The promise that life can go on, no matter how bad our losses. That is can be good again. And only Peeta can give me that.”

And then in the epilogue when she has her little aside and says "there are much worse games to play"- PERFECTION!

I did find it kind of sad though that after all these years she's still so dead inside. She dosen't even really enjoy her children- she can't even call them by their names. Such brilliance on the part of S.C.

Definitely a tougher book to read than the other 2 but just amazing in its own right.

This! Exactly. The words jumped off the page to me - "THEY play in the meadow. .... When I first felt HER stirring inside me, I was consumed with a terror that felt as old as life itself. Only the joy of holding HER in my arms could tame it. Carrying HIM was a little easier, but not much" Chat Icon She is so distant still. Still so broken.

I read the third book at 9 monts pg, so I think that gave me a different view on the ending.

When i first felt DD move, I was terrified... because I just loved her so much. I instantly wanted to protect her from everything. The thought of losing her scared the cr@p out of me. Once she was born, the love I had for her hit me like a tidal wave. I was still afraid, but the love I felt offset some of the anxiety.

Katniss lost everyone she ever cared about, except Peeta. No matter how much you care for other people in your life, loving a child is entirely different. She had to have been exponentially more scared than I was when she was pregnant. And the "joy of holding her" baby eradicated more of the fear.

Carrying a second baby was easier probably b/c you have a better idea of what to expect; you know how much you're going to love them. But you're still super cautious.

She never names her children in the book b/c she's still frightened for them. She loves them enough to be frightened for them. But she fights through it, and keeps going.

JMO.

I love that you put this into perspective because I totally get that. Obviously I've never had a child and I've never been pregnant so its a total foreign concept to me but as a mommy I really appreciate you putting that into perspective!Chat Icon

I was so happy she ended up with Peeta that I screamed out and said it out loud. My DH turned to me and said way to ruin the movie for me. Chat Icon I told him we HAD to see the movies when they came out!

Re: 3rd Book in Hunger Game series ***THREAD CONTAINS SPOILERS***

I just finished these and had a hard time with the third book as well. Flew through the first two. By the third, I felt sick to my stomach as I got near the end. Hated that Finnick died, even though I new from book 2 he would. Hated how Gale just disappeared, even though I understand how she ultimately ended up with Peeta because they had a special understanding of everything. Hated how broken everyone still was, like her with the kids and how Peeta still grabs a chair when he has trouble with reality. I hated that her mom couldn't even be there for her in the end. I understand how the ending came to be and she had guts to write it that way...but it left me broken, too, and I don't like leaving a series that way.

Even though I loved the first two books, I'm worried about the on screen translation and watching children kill each other...

FWIW- She's breaking up the last book into 2 movies. My guess is she's going to try and fill in the blanks a bit better.
