Worried that I made the wrong move - WWYD
I accepted the job offer I got as a Customer Support Coordinator at the company I interned for years ago. My first day was yesterday. I already have a pit in my stomach like I made the wrong choice by leaving my other company. First of all, I could care less about the product - I used to work in cosmetics which I love. I now work with a totally different product. I could get past that since the paycheck is a lot more, but there's other things that are worrying me.
Yesterday when I came in I was told that I wouldnt be working on any customer accounts and instead they planned to have me working more in new business (qoutes and such...so more like sales). Then today I'm told that I'll be flying to Indiana for training with a new client for 1 day - by myself as the only rep for my department. I'm BRAND new. How can I represent my department when I dont know ANYTHING about it yet?
To top it off, this morning I was told that they are leaning towards changing my title to Business Analyst. My job would be to analyze our sales history basically. I have no experience in sales at all. And no idea what a business analyst even does. They're basically creating a position based on their needs right now. The company is growing and changing, which I understand, but I came on board under the pretenses that I would be in Customer Support, which is what I am good at and what I am comfortable with. It's where ALL my experience is. And if I ever wanted to go back into cosmetics (which I plan on doing down the road) I need to continue to have the customer service background. Business Analysis is not going to get me anywhere.
I'm really worried that I made the wrong choice. PArt of me is rationalizing that I need the money and I should suck it up and it will get better. But another part of me is wishing I never left my old place.
Has anyone else made a change like this and regretted it? WWYD? Should I stay and just see where it takes me? Should I be talking to my boss about the position and title?

I would stay - I would also go and speak with someone be it HR or your old boss and state that this is the position that I was hired for. I was not hired to be an analyst. Was it explained to you that you would have to travel for this position? I would also bring that up. Good Luck with your choices - I hope it all works out for you!

i would speak to someone about it - if they're asking you to do something other than what they hired you for then that's not right!! if you're truly unhappy there then i would consider not staying... money can't buy happiness!

I think you should give it more time. Try to be excited about this new position with new company. They must have a lot of confidence in your abilities or they wouldn't have chosen you for the position they are creating. I think Business Analyst sounds like a great title!

Thanks ladies. I'm trying to keep an open mind and be excited for this new opportunity...I think it's just turning into something that I wasnt planning on.
They did tell me I'd have to travel but they said it would be VERY rare (maybe twice a year). I started yesterday and I'm already scheduled to go on a business trip in early December. I have a feeling this is only the first of many trips. I'm okay with that as long as it's not every week. I'm just a little surprised because I'm brand new and I didnt think I would be traveling right off the bat.

I would try to set your boundaries early on.
I've seen this situation happen a few times where I am currently. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
It can be exciting to be molded for a brand new position that fits the company's needs, but at the same time, if it is totally NOT what you signed up for it may be wise to consider cutting your losses and moving on.
FWIW, that kind of title sounds like something that could open doors in other places.
I would give it at least a few months as well. They say it takes the average person even 6 months to even a year, to start to feel comfortable at a new job.
