How to cope with irrational or rational fears of getting seriously sick.

Lately it's been getting really bad. My brain doesn't stop thinking about every ache and pain i have!! I truly believe something is wrong with me..everyone thinks im nuts though!! I may be nuts!! Chat Icon
I had some heart flutters last week so now on top of the big "c" I think I have heart blockages!! Chat Icon

Im think im going to make a dr. appt and just tell him about that heart thing to get in..then I'll tell him all my fears... maybe!!

I know where it comes from. My mother passed away 8 years ago this Dec 12th from Breast Cancer.. Rationally I know this is where the fear comes from!! But lately...I really feel like I can't get a hold of this fear and control it!!

Im rambling..sorry!!

I have done this too in the past and I think it's because now of days, you just don't know anymore. You hear so much, don't do this, drink this, eat this, it causes cancer, or this causes this disease or that disease. There is just so much that can go wrong. But, on the flip side, you can take every single precaution as far as your health and you can walk outside and be hit by a bus. I have convinced myself that what matters most is that I enjoy each and every day to the fullest because life is way to short to dwell on what could go wrong when there is so much that can go right. Also, dont ever ever go on webMD...that site can make you go bonkers when looking up the little symptom! Just listen to your body and if you feel like something is really, really wrong, then go to the doctor and make sure you get your yearly physicals to give yourself peace of mind.

I get these too. I think as you have children that makes it worse. The thought of not being here for my boys....What has always helped me is just going to the Dr. I even feel better once I make the appointment! I had been having pan under my arm and went to see my primary Dr who referred me to a breast surgeon. Of course I was convinced I was going to have lymph nodes or a tumor, but nothing. Everything was fine and its just hormonal. The heart thing could be stress. It just happened to my SIL and she is fine

I absolutely know how you feel. I too lost my mom to breast cancer almost 15 years ago. And I always have this is the back of my mind that something is going to happen to me too. Anytime i have blood work done i think they are going to find "something" you just have to try to stay as positive as you can. Chat Icon Chat Icon focus on the good

I kind of know how you feel. Chat Icon I lost my mother to cancer as well several years ago Chat Icon , and before she got it, she was the model of perfect health. So I can't help but feel a little scared that the same will happen to me even though I take care of myself and try to live healthy. I try to push it out of my mind as much as I can so I don't end up spending all my time worrying about "what ifs". It's good to go the doctor for regular checkups and to get unusual symptoms checked out, but if you start to feel like your worries are taking over and are affecting your day to day life, then maybe it would help to talk to a therapist to help you deal with those feelings. PROMISE you WILL discuss your fears.

What I think you should do is write down what is "bothering" you, weather you think its real, or not real (hence the quotation).

This way it WILL ease your mind that you have discussed everything with the doctor, and have left nothing behind.

But let them know what you are thinking and why. Let your doctor HELP you to get through this, even if it is in your head.

You will NOT feel better if you dont openly discuss whats bothering you!

Oh I get like that too. But I find that the more I dwell on in the worse the "pain" becomes. Know what I mean? I was having chest pains also recently and I swear as soon as I went to the Dr and found out everythng was ok - they went away Chat Icon I'm telling you - my mind was playing tricks on me big time. Re: How to cope with irrational or rational fears of getting seriously sick.

i never worried about dying , getting sick , losing my husband , my house getting broken into ..yadda yadda.

after having my baby in june and my father passing in july...i actually take larasapam every so often when my mind acts up and kicks my anxiety into overdrive....its so bad every lil heartburn pain major headache i think thisi s it let me write down who i want to raise my dd and how i want things done ..its retty sick now that i see it in writing lol.

I think now having to care for someone else makes me think the worst sometimes.

The heart thing is probably anxiety. Have you discussed with your doctor about your chances of getting breast cancer? Were you ever tested for the gene?
