Puppies & shelters

Do you ever see puppies at shelters? After a considerable amount of research, a viszla is not a good fit for our family right now. I do not have 2 hours a day or more to dedicate to exercising a very active puppy like the viszla. Because my DS is very young, I am not comfortable getting a older dog (or even older puppy). Have you ever seen young puppies (2-4 months) at a shelter? What has been your experience with shelter dogs in general? We have only gotten purebred dogs in my family growing up, but I'm having a hard time finding a breed that will fit in well with us.

Re: Puppies & shelters

We got our puppy from North SHore. He was 10 weeks when we got him. He honestly has been the best dog. Was easy to potty train. Never chewed on anything and is just super friendly.

He is a lab/pit mix with something else. So he is big. But they had tons of puppies there the 2 times we went.

Re: Puppies & shelters

When we were first married we got a puppy at North Shore to. The process was all day, (make sure your references are home and answer the call otherwise you won't get the dog) but they had tons of them. Again that was 16 years ago but hey it's still going so I assume they are still good.

Re: Puppies & shelters

Our dog wasn't a true puppy when we got her. She was about a year old. She is a Terrier Mix...some kind of mix of small terrier breeds.

Our experience adopting (We got her from TOH) was excellent. The whole process took about 5 days from when we spotted her and put in an application and when we were able to take her home. She has been the best family pet you could ask for. She is patient, gentle and sweet with the kids. She loves taking long walks with me. At night she just cuddles us and loves to be pet.

Keep looking. We put applications in for 3 dogs before we got the phone call that we were approved for Charlie. We were persistant, and for a good reason, she was obviously the dog for us!

Re: Puppies & shelters

honestly, older dogs have great temperaments ime, you don't have to potty train and usually they know they are being "saved" and are adoring. We have all rescues, mine was 5 when we got him and my moms was 2 years and another 4 months.
Do try to check out a kill shelter, including Queens and Manhattan and Town of Hempstead. Also rescues like Bobby and the Strays who pull animals from the shelters and try to place them. Best of luck!

I agree, but I feel it's more of a risk bringing an older dog into the home with my 18 month old DS than a very young puppy.

I feel very good about this decision! It seems a mix breed might be a much better fit for us as a family.

I had FM but I have had great experiences with Little Shelter. With the older dog vs puppy... I know at Little Shelter they do a socialization before you can adopt to make sure it is a good fit. My 3 year old abused puggle is stupendous with my students (I teach children with autism). My little man kicks him and hits him and while we are trying to get him not to my puggle does not leave his side when he visits. Good luckChat Icon Chat Icon

Ultimately you have to do what you're comfortable with, but a puppy is like a baby and since you have 2 little ones already an older dog might not be "as" much work

Re: Puppies & shelters

Our family adopted our beagle/shepard mix when she was about 8 weeks old at North shore animal league and then I volunteered there all through highschool in the puppy room and the puppy hold Chat Icon

From my experience, yes they always, always have puppies and usually have more in the back but they are mostly large breed mixes. They rareeeely get smaller puppies.

And I think you will have a hard time finding a low shedder from there, especially a puppy. Lots of lab, shepard, chow mixes.

Our family went there ever few weekends for a few MONTHS before we fell in love with our rosie!

good luck

Re: Puppies & shelters

Check petfinder.com if you're looking breed specific, you'll probably find a rescue that has whatever breed you're looking for. Although I have seen a few smaller breed like yorkies and maltese etc go through the animal care and control website as well

when we adopted our pup from North Shore we got him on the same day, they had to call our references and then when we were approved we took him home. Make sure you have a leash and collar when you go.
