How much should I charge to tutor?
I'm a third year science teacher at a Catholic high school. I went to a pretty decent college (only have my BS now), and I was recently offered a position tutoring a high school girl in regents Bio.
I tutored while in college but mostly for the families that I babysat for so the rate was the same.
Given all that background info, how much would you charge? What's an acceptable rate? I have no idea!
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Def. Depends on where you teach, but I'd say minimum $50 an hour. I tutored elementary reading and math and charged $70 an hour.

Re: How much should I charge to tutor?
I currently am tutoring a 10th grader (I've been tutoring him since he was in 8th grade) and I charge 60 an hour. For new customers, I'm raising my rate to 70 (but willing to negotiate).
I have MA+15, 4 part time years teaching but 6 years working in a district.

Re: How much should I charge to tutor?
Talk to your union members/co-teachers about this. You don't want to lowball too much because there is a stipulation to keep the tutoring fees pretty consistent. The rates are different in different areas, though.
My brother tutors Foreign Languages in and around Soyosset/Oyster Bay and charges $100/hour. They don't even flinch!
I tutor around Bethpage, Rockville Centre, Merrick Bellmore etc. and I get $75/hr. Business isn't booming, but I teach social studies. I think math and science have a lot of business in secondary levels...
Good luck!

Re: How much should I charge to tutor?
Normally I'd think 60/hour is fair. Although it depends... I tutored a boy over the summer & charged only 40/hour... I know I could have gotten a lot more but his parents struggle financially & I didn't want it to be a burden for them. This way they were able to afford more hours with me & the kid ended up passing the regents. So I think you could take a lot of things into account when deciding how much to charge.
