Kitchen layouts! UGH
Why is this sooooo stressful? Designing our new kitchen is keeping me up at night!

You need to get a designer to do it. Don't have a contractor or builder do it. You need a professional.

I hear ya! That's why I hired an NKBA designer to design my kitchen. She gave me professional plans I can use to submit for permits and also gave alot of advice and went shopping with me.
The only thing with designers is you want to do your own comparison shopping because they may not give you the best price. I think for all products I priced out, I was able to find better prices on my own, but then gain I'm a fierce bargain hunter who scour the web for every item down to faucets and vent/exhaust lights. Designers do get some sort of discount with dealers but the commission they give themselves will often negate the discount.

I had a few kitchen designers do my kitchen and I didn't care for it. I spent a total of 12 hours doing it myself and I am so happy with it. I made sure I knew what I was putting in each cabinet and where in the kitchen it was going. When the cabinets were up and I started to fill them, it all made sense.
My kitchen is a year and half old and I have never once said I wish I added this or I wish I put this there. You are the one in the kitchen every day and you know what you use on a daily basis. Take that into account and if a designer is doing it, look at those cabinet sizes, where they are placed, if it is draw and door cabinets, just drawers or just a door. If it has roll out shelves, how many. You can have 1 adjustable and one roll out. Think of what you were missing in your old kitchen and is it in your new kitchen. Think of what you felt was wasted in your old kitchen and see if it is there. For me I had a 6 inch cabinet you could store cutting boards and sheets pans. I didn't put that back in and I don't miss it all.

omg i have the same problem.
truth is that we're years away from actually doing anything in our kitchen but it's like a puzzle to me so it keeps me up at night.
i am constantly taking measurements and drawing layouts so that i can get everything i want into it.
when we actually have the money to do it, i'm hiring a professional and giving them my doodles lol so that hopefully i won't forget anything i really want in there.

Just to be clear, it's a good idea to design your kitchen yourself if you're keeping the same floor plan, but if you want to change the layout and can afford to, it's best to consult with a designer because he/she can better advise you on whether things will fit 'cus they will account for wall space, saddles, and other structural restrictions, etc.
If keeping the same plan, just go to a designer cabinet store and asked for the most experienced desginer to help you out. It's usually free and as long as you know what you want (pullouts vs. drawers, etc.) they will help and also advise on what's possible/not possible (ie. door hinge on left instead of right, etc.)
