If you have an Elf on the Shelf....
Did you buy the official Elf on the Shelf book that comes with an elf?
DH found a cute elf on Amazon but it's not the one that comes with a book. I know DS would understand the story much more if there was an accompanying book.
Is the offical Elf on the Shelf my only option?
ETA: Where did you buy yours?

Re: If you have an Elf on the Shelf....
I bought it at target. I got the book and the elf. The book explains to the children what the elf does and the rules regarding the elf.
So I had the book set up on the table for when they woke up and they got so excited thinking the elf was there. We read the book together and found the elf.

Love the story and the cute little elf so I stuck with the orginal. I bought it at Barnes and Noble a few days ago with a 40% off coupon..I literally ran to the store at night in the rain to get it before it expired!

I bought mine from Target. Its was $29.99 and came with the book. They also had a skirt you could buy in case DC names it a girl.

We bought & prefer the original that comes with the book. We bought it years ago before DS was born at a Christmas shop in VT.
I love the original elf that comes with the book. I actually think the knockoffs are weird looking. It's probably because growing up I had TONS of the "elf of the shelf" around my house growing up - even though the story didn't exist - those elves did.

I bought the box set Elf on the Shelf with the book from Hallmark
But after watching the ELf Story (which my DS loved- ran out and got the DVD which we're actually watching right now), I got him the plush doll to play with as well!

I got mine at Hallmark and the kids think that we have to read the story each year to "activate" our elf :)

I actually love those elves! My mom would tuck them in the tree and all around but never the story, just decoration. I pick them up at estate sales whenever I see them.
Just watched the movie the other day and let DS hold one of my vintage elves before knowing the story and that if a kid touches it, it loses its magic. So if we were going to follow the story, our elf would not be magical anymore!
Check your library for the book if you do not want to buy it. If you are going to follow the true story then I'd get the book but if you're going to make up your own rules with him, then tell your own story.
