What are we supposed to do with the Elf during the day?

What are we supposed to do with the Elf during the day?
I'm so confused with this. I see so many people doing cute things with the Elf but what happens after DC sees the Elf in the morning? Do you move it after your child "finds" it? I've just been putting him in boring places like shelves and cabinets.

You only move it once, at night when they go to bed. So every morning they find it and at night the elf goes and tells Santa how the kids behave.

That's what i've been doing but wanted to do fun things with him. Pinterest has so many cute ideas but on the floor...counter...stuff like that. The boys have already lost interest in him...lol.
