Class collection for teachers gift...
What is the norm to contribute? I think ours is too low and I am a bit concerned. I am contributing but I think I am going out on my own as well.

Ours is $10 per child. I already had bought my own gifts so I'm giving those as well.

$12 each child for 3 teachers is what we were asked to contribute.

We ask for a $5 per child contribution for the teacher and a $2 per child contribution for the classroom aide.

Re: Class collection for teachers gift...
This year we are collecting $7 for one teacher but there is 26 kids in the class. Last year we collected $10 when there was a teacher and an aide. Our PTA only allows us to collect $10 max. I do a gift on my own too though.

Wow! We are in the same ballpark as all of your posts. We are 10 dollars for a teacher and an aide. Its about 100/each total. I would never have thought to contribute 5 bucks to a teachers gift. Like I mentioned, I think I am going to give a gift from dd.

Many teachers cannot accept gifts more than $75. Even if it's from a group.

Re: Class collection for teachers gift...
My daughter's class is Pre-K and the collection was for whatever we are comfortable with. I gave $30 for both the teacher and the paraprofessional, so $15 for each. I feel like their job is harder with the younger kids.
My son is in 1st grade and the class moms gave the suggested amount of $20. That's what I was going to give anyway, for both the teacher and the assistant.

For J's K we did $10, for D's it was $5. I also send in my own gifts for them.

Re: Class collection for teachers gift...
I am a Class Mom and we took a collection for a class gift. Totally optional, and some people did not contribute. Most did. We did not specify amount, just that we were collecting for both the teacher and her assistant.
We collected nearly $500 for the teacher and $400+ for the assistant. There are 20 children in the class and some very, very generous parents.

I guess it can be seen as bribing. 2 different LI districts I have worked in have had this policy. Not sure if it's a NYS thing or a local board decision.
ex:
Gifts: A Board member, officer or employee shall not directly or indirectly solicit any gift or accept or receive any gift having a value of [insert dollar amount, not to exceed $75] or more, whether in the form of money, services, loan, travel, entertainment, hospitality, thing or promise, or any other form, under circumstances in which it could reasonably be inferred that the gift was intended to influence him or her in the performance of his or her official duties or was intended as a reward for any official action on his or her part.

Re: Class collection for teachers gift...
Ours is $10. They are collecting $5 for the main teacher, $2.50 for the Special Ed Teacher who is in our room part-time, we share her with the other inclusion class, and $1.25 for each of the aides in the room.
To be honest we are still doing something else for the teachers. Something small (dunken donuts gcs and cards/letters) ... but I do believe it is the thought that counts.

Re: Class collection for teachers gift...
OK, heres my take from most of the above responses... If most parents still feel the need to buy something else, then why not have the class gift higher in the first place? If they took 25 from me, I would feel a hell of alot better and not feel obligated to give another gift. Also, in regard to "bribery", Just me but the most important person to me is the person that is with my child/children when I am not around. Call it what you will, but I am making that person MOST happy. Thank you for the responses bc I am going to include a nice written card like some of you described above. I appreciate all teachers do. I feel bad that budget cuts make it nearly impossible for them to give the 1:1 attention that they probably truly desire to give to each and every child.

Re: Class collection for teachers gift...
I know that the reason why we are buying something else ... isn't because we are looking to spend a ton of money on the teachers. To be honest we're trying to figure out how the heck we are buying presents for immediate family, we don't have a ton of money to spend on teachers. But DD loves her teachers and really wants to get them something small just from her. She was very thoughtful about it, and said that her teachers were always drinking coffee from dunken donuts and she said that they would like coffee. She wanted to bring them each a coffee on the last day of school before Christmas! I had to tell her that it would be much easier to just get them giftcards! So that is where the extra small gift from us is coming from....DD wants to do a little something just from her, and I think that is fine!
ETA: And while I think teacher gifts are really nice, I do think that the card that DD is writing out for her teachers, and the little note I will put in from us thanking them for her hard work and letting them know how much we appreciate everything they are doing, is the most important thing!

As a Pre-K teacher I fully agree w/ the above. The handwritten, student notes & thank you cards are what end up getting saved in my teacher "treasure" chest.
Our school also does a general collection but then out of 20 students just about all give a separate gift as well (the collection is $10 for the entire school & is split among all teachers/assts.--$100 teachers & $50 assts).

Re: Class collection for teachers gift...
Wow - DD is in preK but we have to give $35 for her class and $35 for my DD#2 who is a 2 year program. In the 4 year program it gets divided between 3 teachers and the director and the office assistant and music teacher (20 kids). In DD#2 there are 9 kids and 2 teachers plus the director, office assistant and music teacher.

Re: Class collection for teachers gift...
I think last year in pre k we did 10 per kid which covered 1 teacher and 1 assistant. This year the class moms didn't do one!
