IV Question: Beginning of the process

Hi! So I am starting my first round of IVF. My Dr. told me that he would put me on birth control pills right away when i got my period. When I spoke with the nurse/PA (whatever you call them:) ) after my sono, she said if i had a normal cycle i didn't need to do that, and that they would start me on lupron on day 21. I'm nervous that I will have ovulated by then.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal? I'm going back this week to the Dr for a sono so i guess he will be able to tell my progress then. I'm just nervous that this will not work.

Please shed some light!

Re: IV Question: Beginning of the process

The first time I did IVF (with RSofNY) they did 10 days of bcp before stims even tho I had a regular cycle.

When I moved to RMA, I asked about bcp, and they said they only do that if your cycle is irregular, and I started lupron on day 21.

So it varies. Get in touch with the doctor to find out which protocol they want.

that's what they told me too. I'm assuming my cycle is considered normal if it comes every 30 - 33 days, but the flows have been light(ish). Is it safe to assume that everything is normal? I'm just sooooo nervous that they won't be able to get my eggs.

Re: IV Question: Beginning of the process

I would trust your doctor and if you're having these concerns, it's a better idea to question them on the protocol than us... just my opinion.. Everyone on here has different protocols. I have done 2 fresh cycles that each had different protocols even... It's just so hard to compare since everyone has such a specific situation and response to drugs, etc.. not to mention that different doctors have their own theories. These treatments are more of an art than a science.

Everyone has a different protocol so its hard to say for sure. I personally did 3 weeks of BCPs and I don't think its because my cycle was irregular I think it was just easier for the RE to monitor me if they had complete control over my cycle.

This is exactly how I started. I don't know a lot because this is my first cycle, but on CD21 I started Lupron because bw and sono showed I ovulated. So now I have been doing it every night and am waiting for AF (any day now). Once I get AF then I started with follistim.

So really it is the next cycle. They want you to have ovulated by CD21 otherwise they won't start you on Lupron until bw and sono shows you have.

This is as far as I know because this is as far as I have gotten with my ivf cycle so far.

Good luck!

Wait...I'm confused. So you are supossed to ovulate before the lupron? I haven't had my class yet on the details, but my Dr. did review the process with us. I guess I missed that part.

What is the actual process?

Well for me I ovulated on CD15, so on CD21 I started the lupron, so I had already ovulated. Now AF is coming any day and I imagine that is when I start follistim to make the eggs grow.

Then instead of ovulating I have the ER, then a 5 day transfer.

Does that make sense? It's the next cycle that the ivf is done in, CD21 lurpon just "turns off" the natural process so the drugs can take over.

Sorry I don't know a lot about this yet, but this is how my process is going so far.
