Advice needed regarding renovating with family help
So I'm remodeling my kitchen and DH's dad offered to volunteer his time for the plumbing work. It will save us a few grand since we're doing alot of moving around of pipes.
The problem is I'm not sure if it's the best idea anymore.
So far, we're off schedule by 2 weeks 'cus of plumbing delays that result from a combination of FIL not being able to prioritize tasks that needed to be done, mistakes and slowness resulting from age.
My FIL is retired and doing the work on his own so it's taking him alot longer.
There are still more stuff to be done (including fixing more plumbing issues and adding heating) and I'm torn as to hiring another plumber to help him out. I've suggested to DH about this and he's upset that I'm even suggesting it.
At the rate the plumbing is going, I think it'll be March before the kitchen is finished. :(
The longer this remodel takes, the more expensive it gets as we dine out more, take out more and buy more prepackaged food.

He might have been when he was younger, but I think doing such a big job is hard on him and his health isn't the best. He's making mistakes like reading plans wrong, or drilling holes in wrong places ... I know my GC has had to fix up things that plumbing mistakes caused.
I just hope my GC does not walk out on the job 'cus he's fed up with the situation. :(

i think you answered your own question. this is why we never let family do anything for us, no matter the cost.

Ditto. It sounds like you're not really saving much money in the long run, things are taking longer than expected, they aren't up to the quality you're looking for, and you have no recourse if/when things don't go well.

Re: Advice needed regarding renovating with family help
It's easy for us to say just hire another plumber, but unfortunately it's not that easy.
DH HAS to talk to his father - because he's costing you time & money and that's not fair to either of you. If DH is unable to see that his dad is causing delays, I'm not sure what else you can do. I don't think the GC will walk off the job, but don't be surprised if his bill goes up due to fixing FIL's mistakes.
Hard situation to be in!

Sorry. Family can be tricky. You did answer your own question, but it is your DH's place to talk to his father. In no way an enviable position to be in. Fingers crossed it all works out!

Re: Advice needed regarding renovating with family help
I've had these issues beofre, I'm surprised you GC is allowing you to have him do it, since it probably is significantly delaying the GC. I've alwys had it where we were the ones doing the work with family help, so there wasn'ta business owner who is delayed.
why doesn't your husband take a few days off from work and help him knock out the work? Unless he's very unhandy, the other set of eyes and hands can help a lot and talking out problems makes things easier too.
